Rufus Levon "Duke" Christopher

Rufus Levon Christopher, known affectionately as Rufus to all who knew him, left this world on July 26, 2025, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, New Jersey. Born on May 4, 1969, in Atlantic, Virginia, Rufus was the cherished third child of six to his doting parents, Sharon and Alvin Thomas.
Rufus' formative years were spent under the wide skies of Accomack County, where he received his education before pursuing and achieving a degree in criminal science from Eastern Shore Community College. His education was but one facet of his accomplished life; Rufus held an unwavering passion for people that led him to embrace the medical field, a pursuit that prompted his relocation to Asbury Park, New Jersey in the early 1990s.
For 35 years, Jersey was Rufus' sanctuary-a place where he also met his beloved bonus mother, Helen Johnson. Their bond was one of deep affection and respect, with many days and nights spent in heart-felt conversation and mutual admiration.
Rufus was driven by his desire to be more than just a spectator in his community, and in 1996 he established his own bail bond service in Neptune, New Jersey. His business thrived, serving the New Jersey tri-state area for numerous years. Yet it was his fervor for hairstyling that captured his heart most. His true passion was evident to all who had the privilege of sitting in his chair, where they were assured to walk away not just with a stylish coiffure but a lifelong friend.
Rufus' impact on this world was as memorable as his vibrant personality. His legacy of love, compassion, and creativity lives on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed.
Rufus was preceded in death by his only son, Marcus Boggs; his grandparents; his brothers; and niece.
Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Sharon and Alvin Thomas of Atlantic, VA; sisters, Linda (Brian) Christopher and Joann Shepard, both of Atlantic, VA; brothers, Terry (Yvonne) Johnson of Parksley, VA, Alvin (Marie) Christopher of Salisbury, MD, and Gregory (Natasha) Collick of Killeen, TX; bonus mom, Helen Johnson of NJ; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
