Russell Briody Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Browning Funeral Home - Evansville on Jun. 26, 2025.
Russell Keith "Russ" Briody, 88, of Evansville, Indiana, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, June 9, 2025. Russ passed away at North Park Nursing Center after a brief stay.
Russ was born in Evansville, Indiana, on June 1, 1937, to the late Russell Fieldon and Dorothy Evelyn (McNeal) Briody. He attended Fulton Grade School and graduated from Central High School in 1955. From 1957 until 1961, Russ honorably served in the United States Navy, eventually reaching the rank of Electrician's Mate 2nd Class. He completed basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station and served aboard the USS Hector (AR-7). His naval career took him all over the world to places like Long Beach and San Diego, California, Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Honolulu, Hawaii. Russ worked for the United States Postal Service for 34 years, nearly all of them as a letter carrier, and retired in 2000. In May of 2019, Russ was thrilled to take part in Honor Flight of Southern Indiana's EVV10 flight to Washington, DC, accompanied by his son, Doug. Over the years, Russ enjoyed bowling, golfing, reading, traveling, genealogy, crossword puzzles, and playing cards with friends. He was known for his quick wit and his clever way with words. Russ was a member of Oak Hill Bible Fellowship, where he served as an elder. Previously, he attended Northside Congregational Church, and he was a long-time member of Olivet Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and a deacon.
Russ is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judith Claire "Judy" (Overton) Briody; son, Douglas Keith (Sandra W.) Briody; sister, Judith R. "Judy" Jourdan; grandchildren, Robert Cotton (Megan A.) Fulkerson and Caroline Sublett Briody; great-grandchildren, Flora Pepper Fulkerson and Daisy Grey Fulkerson; sister-in-law, Linda G. Briody; brother-in-law, John W. (Pamela S.) Overton; and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Thelma A. Williams, June C. Yunker, Maryann Albin, and Dorothy M. "Dot" Dockery; and by his brothers, Robert F., Jack W., and Kenneth A. "Hoot" Briody.
A celebration of Russ' life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 E. Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711, with Pastor Eric Rawdon officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Retired Veterans Memorial Club.
Friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until service time on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Browning Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 6100 Dutchmans Lane, Ste. 401, Louisville, KY 40205, to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123, to Oak Hill Bible Fellowship, 1026 Oak Hill Rd., Evansville, IN 47711, or to Heart to Heart Hospice, 610 E. Walnut St., Ste. A, Evansville, IN 47713.
