Russell Kenneth Fischer, age 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 24, 2025, under the gentle support of Aviva Memory Care, Valparaiso and Dunes Hospice. Russ was surrounded in spirit by the love of his family and friends.
Born in Blue Island, Illinois, on October 15, 1931, Russ lived a long and prosperous life grounded in craftsmanship and creativity. He was a proud graduate of Thornton High School in Harvey, IL, and grew up alongside his brother, Carl Fischer, who preceded him in death.
On October 25, 1952, Russ married Patricia Ann Helton, the love of his life. Their 71 year marriage was filled with love, and a commitment that stood the test of time. Pat passed away in April 2024, and Russ carried her memory with him each day.
He is survived by his two children, John Fischer (Becky) and April Fallon; as well as four beloved grandchildren, Justin John Fischer, Jon Matthew Fischer, Mitchell Kenneth Fallon, and Claudia Michelle (Fallon) Krock. He was affectionately known as "Grandpa" and "Papa" to his grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Paul, Louise, Bella, JJ, Julian and Estella.
Russ began his career at Blue Island Lumber and later founded Fischer Construction, where he brought his incredible skills of carpentry and woodworking to his specialty of remodeling homes. His hands built not just structures, but stories-furniture, stained glass, and artistic pieces that will live on as part of his legacy. He was also a gifted painter, writer, and cyclist, with a curious mind and adventurous spirit that never waned.
He cherished life's simple pleasures: a good cup of coffee, a home-cooked meal by Pat, and the satisfaction of creating something meaningful with his own hands. On his 70th birthday, he designed and received his first tattoo-a bold reflection of the independent and creative soul he remained throughout his life.
Russell's impact on those around him was quiet but profound. He was a man of strength, dry humor, and grit. His legacy will continue to live on in the lives he touched and the beautiful things he built.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, Indiana.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honor Russell by creating something with your hands, sharing a meal with loved ones, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in his memory.
