Russell McClearn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Valley Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Roanoke on Jan. 11, 2026.
Russell Todd McClearn, affectionately known as Russ, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on December 3, 2025, after a fierce and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on October 16, 1959, in Poughkeepsie, New York. A devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend to many, Russ will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Russ worked at Integer Holdings for many years and was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1978 to 1989 as a radio teletype operator and utility equipment operator, earning numerous awards during his service. Following his military career, he became a day trader and was well respected for his sharp analytical mind. Russ was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan and greatly enjoyed large family reunions. He attended Kingston High School and Ulster Academy in Kingston, New York.

A reflection shared by his sister Tammy captures Russ's spirit perfectly: Russell was one of the smartest people she knew. He read newspapers daily and was incredibly knowledgeable about history, the stock market, and business. He spent countless hours researching the family's ancestry, a passion that brought meaning and pride to many. Russ had an exceptional ability to think ahead, whether playing chess, pool, poker, or board games, often winning with ease. He gave thoughtful advice, making even the most complicated problems seem simple and logical. He was a truly special person, loved and admired by many.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Doris Jean (Umbaugh) Poluski; his father, Carl M. McClearn Jr.; his sister, Julie A. Carter (John); his brother, Randall W. McClearn; his sisters, Sherrie L. McClinton (John), Tammy L. Bence (Dave), and Amy S. Lopiano (Paul); and his special friends, Crystal, Sylvia, Khadija, and Glenn.

The immediate family will gather at a later date for a celebration of Russ's life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
