Ruth Mildred Davis, the Sweetheart of Roby and a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully in her home on November 26, 2023, at the age of 100. She leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and unwavering support for her family, friends, and students.

Ruth was born on May 11, 1923, in Houston Texas. However, she considered herself a true native of Port Arthur, where she grew up. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in May 1941, Ruth pursued higher education at North Texas State University in Denton. It was there that she became a member of the renowned North Texas State Acapella Choir under the direction of Dr. Wilford C. Bain. Ruth's passion for music led her to graduate from Abilene Christian College with a Bachelor of Music Degree.

Throughout her life, Ruth held various roles that allowed her to touch the lives of many people. She worked as a legal secretary for 15 years before dedicating 23 years to teaching in schools. For several decades, she served as a dedicated schoolteacher and librarian for Roby ISD, leaving an impact on countless students who fondly remember her guidance and encouragement.

Music was an integral part of Ruth's life. She served as the First Methodist Church organist for an impressive 43 years. Ruth often mentioned that playing the organ made her feel closest to God—a sentiment that showcased her deep spirituality and devotion. In addition to her role as an organist, she shared her love for music by giving private piano and voice lessons to many aspiring Roby students.

Ruth's talent extended beyond music; she was known for her diverse interests and hobbies as well. She excelled in making homemade jellies, jams, relishes, and pickles—an art that earned her the title of a master craftsman in homemade delicacies. As the owner and operator of Early Texas Taste, Ruth enjoyed showcasing her products at arts and crafts shows and relished the opportunity to meet new people. Her green thumb was evident through her skill in growing plants and harvesting her own pomegranates, pears, pecans, and mesquite beans—all of which she lovingly used in her culinary creations.

Ruth's creativity knew no bounds as she delighted in making jewel trees and exploring Cajun recipes. Her Gumbo was legendary among those fortunate enough to taste it. Not only did these hobbies bring her joy, but they also allowed her to share her passions with family and friends.

Despite facing challenges as she grew older, Ruth remained a steadfast rock for her family. She faced being homebound with unwavering strength, never once complaining about her circumstances. Instead, she made the best of every opportunity and continued to inspire those around her with her determination and positive outlook on life.

Harris Davis, the love of Ruth's life, became her husband in 1940. Together they moved to Roby, creating a treasured home filled with love and warmth. Sadly, Harris passed away too soon in 1970, but Ruth's devotion to him remained steadfast until the end. She never remarried, honoring their beautiful relationship. Ruth was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Patty Davis.

Ruth is survived by her loving son Richard Scott Davis of Abilene, Texas; daughter Patricia Lynne Flach of Roby, Texas; two grandchildren: Jarris Davis (Laura) of New Castle, Oklahoma; Candace Flach of Roby, Texas; three great-grandchildren: Mason and Landon Davis of Oklahoma; Alexis Craver of Roby, Texas; and one sister, Charolette Peters of Spring, Texas.

Funeral services to celebrate Ruth's life will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 10:30 am in the Roby Community Church located on N Church Street and WN 2nd in Roby, Texas. The burial will follow in the Roby Cemetery, where Ruth will find eternal rest.
