Ruth Carolyn Williams was born to Harvey and Lottie Williams on July 3, 1931, in Kansas City, KS. Ruth accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. Her faith was very important to her. She was an active member of Trinity AME Church, Kansas City, Kansas, where she a member of the Usher Board and taught Bible Study. She also served as Superintendent of Sunday school at St. Matthew AME Church, Bonner Springs, Kansas.
Ruth graduated from Bonner Springs High School and attended the Kansas Junior College. Shortly thereafter, in May 1953, she married Phillip Fletcher. To that union was born four children – Jacqueline, Loretta, Donna, and Phillip.
Ruth loved to travel across the United States and Europe. She enjoyed genealogy and photography.
From July 1972-April 1993, Ruth had a successful career as the first Black Executive Assistant to the commander of the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. Those she supported included Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. – the 1st first African American to reach the rank of four-star general, and Colin Luther Powell – five-star general and former United States Secretary of State. Ruth's other jobs included paraprofessional for special needs children, substitute letter carrier, and clerk at the Internal Revenue Service.
After a short illness, Ruth passed away at home on June 28, 2022.
Ruth was preceded in death by her sons, Frederick and Phillip Blair. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Phillip; their daughters – Jacqueline Barnett-Bey, Loretta Fletcher (Myrna McGinnis) (Wichita, KS) and Donna Fletcher. Ruth will also be missed by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces & nephews, cousins, in-laws and lifelong friends.
