Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wiley Funeral Home - Granbury from May 10 to May 11, 2025.
Once upon a time there lived a kind, funny, and faithful woman, Ruth Matheny. The youngest of three, she was born in Odessa, Texas, on August 15, 1960, to Lloyd and Peggy Roberts and grew up to love family, music, and God. Leaving home at 19, she first pursued a career in music therapy at West Texas State University but soon heard the distant chants, "Saw varsity's horns off " and was drawn by the siren's call to Texas A&M University. There she discovered her love for teaching and met the love of her life, Corey Matheny, and soon they married
Those early years were not always easy-she experienced Hodgkins Lymphoma and serious blood clots-but they were filled with love and laughter. She fought through with the same quiet strength that would define her final days-ever a fighter. She went on to become a teacher in the Houston area and eventually had three children-Rachel, Ryan, and Jacob. In 2000, she moved with her family to
Granbury, Texas and over time built lasting friendships that would sustain her through her hardest days. She retired in 2020, after 35 years of teaching, but was never one to sit still, even in retirement, and started a gourmet, oven-fired pizza business with her friends.
She passed away on May 8th, 2025, in her own home in
Granbury, Texas.
Ruth Matheny was a kind, loving, stubborn human being known for her sharp wit and humor, compassion, and faith. To know her was to know warmth, laughter, and a fierce unwavering love. Her love for life was infectious and she loved to travel and experience the world. She loved musicals, horror movies, and her dogs. She cherished her family and friends, and her smile and laughter never failed to lift everyone around her. Ruth made the world a better place, her warmth radiating in every direction, touching the lives of everyone she leaves behind: Corey Matheny (husband), Rachel Matheny (daughter) and Annaliese Dempsey (wife), Ryan Matheny (eldest son) and Chello Miller (partner), Jacob Matheny (youngest son) and Rahul Ramchandran (husband); Rebecca Georgiades (sister), David Roberts (brother) and Jean Roberts (wife); and, numerous nieces and nephews Kevin Georgiades, Laura Opris, Matthew Georgiades, William Roberts, Christina Pineda, Caleb Roberts, and Adrianna Roberts.
