Ruth Stewart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by A.W. Rich Funeral Home - Fairfax on Mar. 30, 2026.
Ruth Elsbeth (Flemming) Stewart age 90 of Burlington, VT went home to be with her Lord and Savior March 20, 2026. She was born in Rothenen, East Prussia, Germany on November 6, 1935 to Otto and Maria (Helmdorf) Flemming. In 1951 when Ruth was 16, the family immigrated to the United States from what was then West Germany. Settling in East Nassau, NY, the family of ten became U.S. citizens.

Ruth married Charles Vernon Stewart of Troy, NY on October 27, 1956 and moved to Burlington the same year. Together they raised a family of two girls and two boys. At the age of 43 Ruth pursued a nursing degree from Fanny Allen School of Nursing. Working as an LPN and then an RN, Ruth was employed by Fletcher Allen Hospital till her retirement.

The couple joined the North Avenue Alliance Church in 1956 and through the years Ruth held multiple positions. She loved children and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was active with missionary outreach, lady's groups and helped establish the Senior Adult Ministries.

Throughout her life Ruth captivated audiences as she recalled her early years in Germany and the trials of war time survival. Ruth spoke of the joy and security she felt, even in desperate times because of a steadfast love of God and family. These experiences turned her into a caring woman of service and she tirelessly gave of herself, always willing to work and be of assistance to others.

Ruth was an excellent cook and known for her hospitality and entertaining. This was accompanied by a good-natured sense of humor, a little comedy, or an occasional prank. Some of the interests she enjoyed were child care, gardening, quilting, knitting, home improvements, playing cards, summer camp and traveling. She enjoyed numerous trips to Germany to visit her relatives and homeland.

Ruth is survived by husband Vern of 69 years, daughter Elaine Koenig (Paul) of Starksburo, VT, son Bruce Stewart (Barry Wood) of Douglas, MI, daughter Norma Chorlian (Philip) of Fairlawn, NJ, son Mark Stewart (Melissa) of Roxboro, NC, grandchildren Ethan Leveillee, Henry & Peter Koenig, Andrew, Maggie, Sophie and Ian Chorlian, Sarah Jensen and Samuel Stewart, six great grandchildren, sister Waltraud and brother Gerhard. She is also preceded by her parents, sisters Hildegard, Maryanne and Ursula and brothers Carl and Horst.

A memorial service will be held at a future time. We request memorial contributions in Ruth's name be made to your local Hospice.
