Ruth Ann Vernon, 72, of Caswell County, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 29, 2026, with her loving husband by her side.
A funeral service will be held at Pleasant View Assembly of God Church on Wednesday, February 4, at 2:00 PM, with Russell and Bill McKinney, along with Gary and Benjamin Loftis officiating. A visitation will be held the night before, Tuesday, February 3, at Wilkerson Funeral Home from 5:00–7:00 PM.
Ruth retired from Caswell County Schools after 25 years of service. As a teacher assistant for Functional Skills students and a bus driver, she touched the lives of many students and families. Her compassion and love were evident each day of her life. In addition, she served for 15 years with the Cherry Grove Fire Department and the Cherry Grove Ruritan Club.
Ruth Ann was an avid softball player and loved BINGO and fishing. She also enjoyed working in the yard—mowing, planting flowers, and, of course, repainting yard ornaments to place in her flowerbeds.
Some remember Ruth as a lucky person. She enjoyed playing the lottery and taking trips to the casino, where she always seemed to win. She cherished traveling with her sisters, especially trips to Cherokee. She was always willing to get in the car and go anywhere to be close to her boys and her family.
In addition to her many hobbies, Ruth loved a good yard sale. She would pull Robert along for miles on the weekends to visit them. Often, these trips resulted in purchases for her grandchildren and great-grandchild. Spending time with them was precious to her, and they held a special place in her heart.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Marie Mansfield; her son, Rodney Ray; and other special loved ones.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert Vernon; her sons, Russell Vernon (Amanda) and Ron Vernon (Suzanne); grandchildren, Madison McKinney (CJ) and Carter Vernon; great-grandchildren, Chase Vernon McKinney and Baby McKinney; sisters, Edna Benfield and Kay Stanley (David); grandmother, Hallie Perkins; along with numerous family members and loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cherry Grove Fire Department and the Cherry Grove Ruritan Club.
