Ruth D. Wright

Ruth Osmond Wright ("Mom" as she was lovingly called by everyone who knew her), age 96 of Lower Makefield Township in Yardley passed away peacefully at home on 12/26/20 at her beloved Broadmeadows Farm with her daughter at her side. Sharon honored Ruth's wishes not to put her in a hospital or nursing home and cared for her. She died of natural causes. A memorial service will be held in the spring at her place of worship of 72 years, The Woodside Presbyterian Church, Pastor Doug Hoglund presiding. Following the service at Ruth's request, there will be a ceremony at the farm in her beloved garden. Funeral arrangements of Ruth's Life Celebration will be taken care of by Swartz Givnish Funeral Home in Newtown PA. Ruth was born on in 1924 to Holstein dairy farmers Jesse and Elizabeth Osmond on the family farm on Street Road in Bensalem (now the site of the Outback Steakhouse.). In 1925 the family purchased and moved onto a 60 acre farm on 2nd Street Pike in Richboro PA. Attending the Richboro School,( across the street from the farm), Ruth loved school and sports. She was catcher on the school traveling softball team (back when they did not use gloves or masks.) She graduated in 1942 with a class of 15. Upon graduation Ruth attended Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia and got a job with General Motors Defense Plant in Ewing NJ for a few years until she married. Then the farm became her life. Throughout her childhood Ruth was a member of the Addisvile Reformed Church (across from McDonalds in Richboro.) She walked to church every Sunday and held perfect attendance for 18 years. Ruth met John at a dance held at the Woodside Community House in 1942. (John grew up and worked on the family's Holstein Dairy Farm, "Breezyvale Farm," in Yardley.) Ruth and John Wright were also married in this church in 1945. In 1948 Ruth and John purchased the neighboring "Briggs Farm" (next to Breezyvale.) and renamed it "Broadmeadows Farm." They raised the calves and crops for the family business at Breezyvale. Broadmeadows Farm now gives English and Western Riding Instruction, Boards Riding Horses and Retirees. Ruth loved her farm and had "Broadmeadows Farm preserved in perpetuity in 2002. She exclaimed it would kill her to see houses spread across the farm. She was a member of Edgewood Grange #688 from 1948 to 1998 and a member of Middletown Grange #684 from 1998 to2020. She held many offices in the Grange. She helped Sharon with the Horse Shows held on the Grange property during the Fair and throughout the year. Ruth could also be found at the Grange Experience Booth welcoming people to the farming and community minded organization during the infamous Middletown Grange Fair held every August in Wrightstown PA. She loved taking her Antique John Deere Tractor "Henrietta" in the Fair's Tractor parade and also competing in the tractor races (and winning multiple times.) She raised and showed Suffolk Sheep. She was 4-H leader for over 25 years and taught rifle safety and marksmanship among other skills. She was a member of Eastern Star. Ruth loved manicuring the grounds and planting flowers on her farm and mowing the lawn and pastures. Loving farm machinery she had multiple John Deere Tractors each having a different job and a name. Ruth had a huge vegetable garden and also started the first "pick your own strawberries" in the area. Ruth played on a bowling team. She organized dinners and other events at the Woodside Community House. She was a very active church member of Woodside Presbyterian Church. She mowed the church lawn for many years and was on multiple committees. Ruth loved traveling in her motor home with her husband, John, until his death in 1988. Afterwards motor home travel continued with her acting as groomsman for her daughter Sharon who raised and showed her Arabian Show Horses all over the country. Ruth was proud to have hosted a campaign stop for George W. Bush. 23,000 people gathered October 28th 2004 on her farm to hear the President speak. Ruth fulfilled her dream by spending one month in Africa with Sharon on a photographic safari. Ruth was a people person and totally enjoyed seeing everyone at her favorite breakfast spot 6 mornings a week at Mil-Lies, 75 South Main in Yardley. She compared it to the little luncheonette in Andy Griffith's Mayberry RFD. She loved all the patrons and those that worked there and they loved her too. The breakfast Club will never be the same. She made friends easily wherever she was. Her longtime friends from Woodside Church and her new friends from New Life Church in Newtown will miss her dearly. She very patriotic and loved her country. Ruth was a huge supporter of the police and the military. Those that drive by the farm during the Christmas season will see Ruth's star shining brightly atop the silo. She used to say that this was her Star of Hope, Peace, Love and Healing. It now shines brightly on Ruth's journey to Heaven. Ruth is survived by her loving extended family, daughter Sharon Kimmel, Richard Kimmel and wife Nancy, their daughter Jessica Kimmel Darlington and husband Jesse and their children, Sister-in-law Elsie (wife of the late Herbert Wright) and her children Douglas (Alice), Amy (David), Nancy (Rick), David (Donna) and their children and nieces and nephews. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband John W. Wright, son Thomas Wright, and brother, Morris. Ruth was a remarkable woman, a pillar of the community, a mentor and her legacy will live on forever. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends and beloved animals. In lieu of flowers Ruth's wish was to send donations to the Bucks County SPCA PO Box 277 Lahaska PA 18931 (215)794-7425.
