Alice M. (Gunser) Betts passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 10. She was 91 years young.
Born on the family farm in Dolington, Alice was the daughter of the late Frieda and William Gunser, Sr., and sister of Peggy Holland and the late Kathryn Scott and William Gunser, Jr.
She attended the one-room schoolhouse in Dolington and graduated from Council Rock High School, Class of 1951.
Alice was the beloved wife of J. Harold Betts, Jr. They celebrated 55 years of marriage before his passing in 2012. Together, they made their home in Solebury, where they raised their children.
For several years, she worked at the First National Bank and Trust Company. She later took the opportunity to serve the residents of Solebury Township in the real estate tax office, first working as the assistant to the collector, and then being elected repeatedly to hold the office of Tax Collector for over three decades.
Alice was equally invested in her volunteer efforts. She was a Life Member and the Treasurer of Middletown Grange #684 and an integral member of the Fair Committee. She loved seeing the Grange Fair come together each year, making many friendships in her decades of service. She was also a member of Bucks County Pomona Grange and the Pineville Protective Society.
In her spare time, Alice loved to cheer on the Philadelphia Phillies, watch 6ABC Action News, bake, travel, read, do puzzles, and play card and board games. However, her greatest joy came from her family. She was the true definition of a matriarch who loved making memories with her family.
Alice is survived by her three loving children: James Robin Betts (Ellen), John Timothy Betts (Denise), and Jennifer Lynn McKenney (Jon), and her 11 grandchildren: Christine Isaacson (Brett), Amber DiIanni (Michael), Justin Betts, Brian McKenney, Shannon Brooks (Peter), Jenna Bosworth, Michael McKenney, Jamie Amodei (Anthony), Jillian Dubost, Kevin Johnson, and Samantha Johnson. She will also be deeply missed by her 19 great-grandchildren.
Alice is also survived by her deeply devoted sister, Peggy Holland; her sister-in-law, Eleanor Gunser; and her brother-in-law, Donald (Ruthann) Betts; and many nieces and nephews, including her and Harold's godchildren, Kimberly Puhalla, Aimee Owens, and Brett Holland.
While saddened by her passing, her family finds comfort in her reuniting with those who preceded her in death, most especially the love of her life, her husband, Harold, their dear granddaughter, Jessica Betts, and Alice's parents and siblings.
In keeping with her true benevolent spirit, Alice requested memorial donations in lieu of flowers. Donations in her name can be made to Middletown Community Foundation- Shop With a Cop (SWAC in the memo line), PO Box 1128, Langhorne, PA 19047 and Peace Valley Nature Center, 170 N. Chapman Road, Doylestown, PA 18901.
Her family invites relatives and friends to her Life Celebration at Swartz-Givnish Funeral Home, 323 Washington Ave, Newtown, PA on Saturday, July 19 from 9am to 11am, with a service following at 11am. Internment will follow in Thompson Memorial Cemetery, Solebury.

Alice was a special lady. We met her when my mom moved into Mercer. (Lori). They quickly became friends and enjoyed the Phillies, playing uno and hanging out. She had such an amazing personality and outlook. She will be missed greatly.

My sympathies to the family. Alice was always a fun person to be around during our years of tax collecting.
