Sally (Ruth) Snowden Downey of Venice, Florida, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 16, 2024. Born in 1926 in Clayton, Missouri to John G. Snowden and Ellene McNeer Snowden, Sally graduated from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana, where she met her husband John Hubert Downey who preceded her in death in 1992.
Sally is survived by her children Alan (Diane) Downey, Laura (Francisco) Smith, and John (Cindy) Downey, her grandchildren Jason (Brittany) Smith, Leah (Charles) Girard, Miriam (Jason) Wrench, Sean Downey, Cole Downey, Margot Downey, and her great-grandchildren Ari Smith, Emilie Wrench, Ayla Wrench, Nathaniel Smith, and Jaxson Downey.
Sally worked as an elementary school teacher and raised her children while living overseas in Brazil, Colombia, Portugal, and Jamaica. Sally and John enjoyed traveling internationally, their adventures taking them through Ireland, England, France, Germany, Spain, Morocco, Mexico, Panama, Argentina, Grand Cayman, and Canada.
After retiring to Venice, Sally volunteered with the Venice Public Library, College Club of Venice, Venice Historical Society and the Phi Mu sorority alumnae chapter and served as a Resident Ambassador for Aston Gardens. She was also an active member of P.E.O. International chapter DU.
