SALLY SMITH Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Zeis McGreevey Funeral Homes & Cremation Service on Jan. 29, 2026.
Sally A. Smith (nee McKenzie) age 91, passed away January 28, 2026. She was the beloved wife of the late James; daughter of Chloe Koons McKenzie and Leonard "Mac" McKenzie; loving mother of Laura Glade (Lloyd) and Michael Smith (Brenda Lynn Fogle); grandmother of Thomas Glade (Oanh Nguyen), John Glade (Zion), Stephen Glade (Megan), Sarah Smith Campbell (Scott), Ryan Smith (Claudia), and Megan Smith (Matt Rodriguez); great grandmother of Ivy Glade, Eden Glade and Colter Campbell. Though she had no siblings, she had over 30 beloved cousins and many cherished lifelong friends.

Sally was born at her grandfather's home in West Frankfort, IL. She attended Red Stripe elementary and met her future husband at the shared 8th grade graduation with another small school, where the two class presidents argued over ceremony details. The pair graduated from Sandoval High School in 1952. Sally obtained her Associate of Arts degree from Stephens College in Columbia, MO in 1954 and her Associate of Business from Southern Illinois University in 1956.

Sally married Jim Smith on February 16, 1957, at the First Methodist Church in Centralia, IL. She worked at St. Mary's Hospital until joining Jim in Chicago, where he was stationed at the 5th Army Headquarters. She worked as a secretary at the Chicago Medical School until the completion of Jim's Army duties. The couple moved in connection with Jim's career at IBM to Kansas City, KS then St. Louis, MO, and settled in Cleveland, OH in 1968.

Sally and Jim loved Cleveland, their family and friends, and spending time at Clifton Beach. Sally served as president of the PTA at the elementary, middle and high school levels in Lakewood, OH. She enjoyed working as a Medical Transcriptionist at Fairview General Hospital for several years before retiring in 1996 to care for her mother in Illinois. She was a devoted member of Rocky River United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, President and Vice President of the U.M.W., Secretary of the Administrative Board, and participated in choir, Lydia Circle, Pairables, the Cavicchi seminars.

Above all Sally was a people person, taking great joy in keeping up with her friends and family and maintaining contact, including sending her family-famous annual Christmas letters. She loved and will be missed.

Memorial service Friday, March 20, 2026 at 10 a.m. at Rocky River United Methodist Church, 19414 Detroit Rd. Rocky River, OH 44116. Interment Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
