Salvatore Joseph Muccigrosso of Corning, NY passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023 in his home. Joe was born on April 9, 1925 in Elmira, NY to Angelo T. Muccigrosso and Clara Lucy DeSocio. Married to Helen R. Dobranski in September, 1948, they were together for over 65 years until she predeceased him on April 19, 2014. Together they raised and are survived by sons, Thomas (April) of Macedon, NY, James (Deborah) of Carmel, IN, Mark (Iris) of LaPorte, IN, daughter, Ann (William) of Loveland, CO, 7 granddaughters, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Joe attended Saint Michael's College in Toronto, Canada for a year (1942-1943). In between classes and homework, he had a small business in his dorm room cutting hair for other students, taking after his father who taught him barber skills at a young age. He later attended and then graduated from Hobart College with a B.S. in Math and Chemistry. He also received a master's degree in Chemical Engineering from Bucknell University.
Joe enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and was trained in midshipmen school and then as an Aviation Electronics Technician's Mate and was honorably discharged in 1946. Most of Joe's professional career was spent with Corning Inc in the city of Corning and in Central Falls, RI. Joe led the Southern Tier Association for the Visually Impaired for several years and has been active member of Corning Rotary for 37 years.
Joe retired in 1982 and spent his time as an avid golfer, a hobby he shared with his sons. A notable retirement accomplishment was a hole-in-one at the Corning Country Club, where he was a member for over 60 years. Joe enjoyed spending time with Helen, family members, and friends at Keuka Lake, a highly treasured spot for all of their family members for many years, complete with lake trout caught by the master fisherman himself.
Joe will be remembered as a devoted, hardworking, headstrong, loving patriarch who always reminded his family how proud of them he was-and how important wine and ice cream are in a balanced diet.
Visiting hours at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney Street, will be held on Friday, February 10, 2023 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary Our Mother Catholic Church, 816 W. Broad Street in Horseheads on Saturday at 9:30am. Burial will follow at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded.
Donations in Joe's name can be made to the Corning Rotary, PO Box 84, Corning, NY 14830.

Joe was the greatest friend anyone could have. My husband enjoyed golfing with him for years. He had a great family also and my sincere sympathy to the family.
