Salvatore C. Sorbera, age 89, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away on December 30, 2024. He was born on May 6, 1935, in Jersey City, NJ, to Sebastiano (Charles, of Palermo, Sicily) ) and Carmela (Nellie) Sorbera.
Sal grew up in Jersey City, NJ. During his high school years, Sal worked at his father's bakery and restaurant, The Roxy, where he learned how to make pizza but more importantly, formed lasting friendships with the Aragona family brothers, who would later become his brothers-in-law.
A pivotal moment in Sal's life came when his friend Teddy Aragona invited him on a double date, leading Sal to meet Teddy's sister, Marie. Their connection blossomed into love, and the couple married on May 12, 1956. They settled in Union City, NJ, where they raised their two daughters, Diana and Linda. In 1968, the family moved to Clifton, NJ, where Sal became an active member of the community and took over the family bakery after his father's passing. Together with his brother-in-law, Joseph Aragona, he co-owned and operated A&S Bakery, growing the business until their retirement in 2001.
Following retirement, Sal and Marie relocated to Lakewood, enjoying 20 wonderful years surrounded by family and friends. They were passionate golfers and cherished their neighbors at Four Seasons. Winters were spent in Florida, where they formed friendships with fellow snowbirds who enriched their lives.
Sal was a devoted fan of Frank Sinatra, Mickey Mantle, and, notably, pizza, always ready to critique the best slices in NJ. He was a remarkable man, known for his selflessness and caring nature. The loss of his beloved wife Marie in 2021 left a profound impact on him, yet he dedicated himself to nurturing the bond with his daughters and grandsons Ryan and Evan, creating a loving relationship that will endure forever.
Sal is predeceased by his parents, Sebastiano and Carmela Sorbera along with his sister Janice Materiale and brother Joseph Sorbera. He is survived by his cherished daughters, Diana Maccia and Linda Sorbera, son-in-law Larry Maccia, and grandsons Ryan and Evan Maccia. He also leaves behind his best friend and brother-in-law Joseph Aragona, sister-in-law Evie Aragona, sister-in-law Tina Ciampaglia, sister-in-law Rose Aragona, and numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, from 4-8 PM at Silverton Memorial Home, 2482 Church Road, Tom's River, NJ. A funeral mass will take place on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Dominic's Church in Brick, NJ, followed by entombment at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Toms River, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated, as Sal was a passionate supporter of their mission.
