Saman Amendra DeSilva, affectionately known as Saman, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, in
Corpus Christi, Texas. Born on February 12, 1967, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Saman's journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his family, his faith, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Saman's early years in Sri Lanka laid a foundation of resilience and determination that would characterize his entire life. He moved to the United States for his higher education, starting at Arizona University and transferring to the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he completed his undergraduate studies in Computer Science. His thirst for knowledge was unquenchable, leading him to earn both his master's and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the same institution. Dr. DeSilva, as he was known in academic circles, went on to share his expertise and passion as a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, the University of Houston, and Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. His contributions to the fields of Computer Science and Cybersecurity were significant and will continue to influence students and colleagues for years to come.
Saman's life was a testament to the Buddhist teachings that guided him. He embodied the principles of loving-kindness and compassion, both in his personal life and through his charitable endeavors. He was particularly dedicated to improving the lives of children in his native Sri Lanka, focusing on supporting their welfare and education. As the Buddha taught, "Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared." Saman lived by these words, spreading joy and knowledge wherever he went.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Priyantha Harasgama; his sons, Peshala and Seth DeSilva, who were the pride and joy of his life; and his siblings, Dilshani, Hiran, and Mayoni De Silva. Together, they shared innumerable moments of love, laughter, and learning. Saman was a devoted husband, a supportive father, and a caring brother. His family remembers him as the pillar of their home, a beacon of wisdom and strength.
In his leisure time, Saman was often found engaging in the activities he cherished most. He took great pleasure in supporting his children's academic endeavors and relished the time spent at chess tournaments and swimming competitions, always encouraging and proud. His intelligence was matched only by his generosity and the love he had for his family and community.
Saman's legacy is one of enlightenment, generosity, and love. His life was a vivid illustration of the Buddhist path-full of mindfulness, ethical conduct, and wisdom. We will remember him for his gentle spirit, his unwavering support, and his remarkable ability to inspire those around him. He was a living embodiment of the best of humanity, and his memory will continue to light the way for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
May he find peace in the pure lands, where the light of Dharma shines eternally. Saman's life was a blessing, and his memory a treasure. He was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
