Samuel Leroy Egli Jr. Surrounded by his loving family, Samuel Egli Jr., peacefully departed on Feb. 12, 2009. Sam was born on Jan. 26, 1925 in Oregon City. He graduated from Benson High School and attended the University of Portland. Sam enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific aboard the Mt. Baker during World War II. In 1947, he married Barbara Franzke and enjoyed a loving marriage for 62 years. In addition to having raised four daughters, they cared for seven grandchildren, three great-granddaughters, and many other family members. Sam was a master craftsman and an independent contractor for custom-built homes in the Portland area. In addition to work and family, he had a passion for cars. He was a long-standing member of the Porsche Club and active in the Sports Car Club of America Racing Program and raced his vintage 1965 356C in many competitions, including the Rose Cup and Portland Historic Races. In addition, Sam had a passion for traveling the world. His adventurous spirit lead him to Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, and Europe. He and his wife spent time with their family sailing in the San Juan Islands and enjoying the beaches of Hawaii. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; sister, Doris; daughters, Linda, Lela, and Laura; sons-in-law, Mark, Dale, and Jeff; grandchildren, Aaron, Aimee, Jason, Trevor, Matthew, Brooke, and Courtney; great-granddaughters, Casey, Zoe, and Nasra; and many, many more. Those who passed before him include his daughter Lynette; sister, Valerie; brother, John; and his parents, Lela and Sam Sr. A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Riverside Golf and Country Club, 8105 NE 33rd Drive, Portland, OR 97221, 503-288-6468. In lieu of flowers, you may write a tax deductible check to Lynette Kelly Scholarship – OCF, the Oregon Community Foundation, 1221 S.W. Yamhill St., Suite 100, Portland, OR 97205-2108.
