Samuel Jefferson Hughes

Samuel J. Hughes, of St. Charles, Missouri, passed away on September 2, 2025, at the age of 77. A beloved son of the late Gale and the late Christine Hughes; dearest brother of Thomas Hughes; loving uncle and dedicated friend.

Born with a gypsy spirit, Sam and his family moved often, but St. Louis always remained home in his heart. From an early age, he was dedicated and hardworking, beginning his first job at just 14. He carried that strong work ethic with him throughout his life.

Sam graduated from Ritenour High School in 1966 and went on to attend Florissant Valley Community College. In 1968, seeking greater opportunity, he enlisted in the United States Navy during a ceremony at Busch Stadium, forever remembered as part of the “Cardinal Company.”

During his six years of service, Sam discovered a profound love for the ocean while stationed in Hawaii. Never having seen the sea before, he quickly embraced it, learning to sail, scuba dive, and often saying, “I spent more time in the water than I did on land.” His Navy years sparked a lifelong affection for the islands, and after his honorable discharge in 1974, Sam made Hawaii his home.

There, he lived his dream; exploring the islands with his dogs and friends, enjoying the freedom of the sea, and perfecting his craft as a cabinetmaker and furniture designer. His exceptional workmanship even caught the attention of actor Tom Selleck, whose home still holds pieces made by Sams skilled hands. He often described those years in Hawaii as “pure utopia.”

Sams adventurous spirit stayed with him throughout his life, whether in travel, new projects, or the joy of simple pastimes. He loved baseball, building model cars and planes, reading, writing, and later in life, watching YouTube videos. He found peace in working with his hands, calling it therapy, and joy in living life at his own pace.

In 2013, he returned to St. Charles to be closer to family. In retirement, Sam treasured the gift of unstructured days, filling them with the things that made him happiest. Always optimistic, even in times of challenge, he lived his life with resilience, warmth, and an adventurous heart.

Sam will be remembered for his unwavering optimism, his deep love of the ocean, his craftsmanship, and his joyful gypsy spirit. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A graveside service will be held for Sam at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. If you would like to join us, please report to the large gravel parking lot on the left of Sheridan Road between 1:00pm and 1:15pm. We will be forming our procession line there to enter Jefferson Barracks together.

The Celebration of Sam’s life will be held after the service at 3:00pm at Tubby Hall, 506 Droste Rd. St. Charles MO.
