Samuel Mills Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ray Funeral & Cremation Service - Asheville on Jan. 1, 2026.
Samuel Robert Mills, Jr., fondly known as Uncle Sammy, was born May 9, 1929, to the late Gertrude Caroline and Samuel Robert Mills, Sr. and departed this life December 30, 2025.

Uncle Sammy was recognized as the mayor of the close-knit Brickton community. He was widely admired and cherished by all residents. He greeted everyone with genuine kindness. Uncle Sammy never met a stranger. His generosity and warmth were well known throughout Brickton. He had an unwavering love for his community, which was returned to him by all. Known for his work ethic, he was dedicated to getting things done. He walked and rode his bicycle every day and maintained impressive physical strength well into his nineties.

Later in life, through the ministry of Rev. David Perry of St. John Baptist Church, Uncle Sammy embraced faith. After attending an all-night prayer service, he accepted Christ in his heart, and from that moment on, he spoke regularly about his spiritual journey, sharing his faith with family and friends. Brickton mourns the loss of their beloved mayor and angel, but his memory will live on. Uncle Sammy will always be cherished.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Leola Mills, Vivian Mills Hutchinson, Sallie Louise Mills Lynch, Mariah Caroline Mills, and Virginia Rankins; his brothers, Thomas Mills and Chester Mills.

Left to cherish his life are several nieces, nephews; great nieces and nephews, including Virginia McClure who was his personal caregiver and Vonnie Mills Logan, who she considered a father figure and whom he affectionately called "Bow."

Family visitation will be at the residence, 2 PM to 4 PM, Saturday, January 3, 2026, 5351 Hendersonville Highway, Fletcher, NC.

Viewing will be 12 PM to 1PM Monday, January 5, 2026, Chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. The funeral will follow at 1 PM.

Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, St. John Rd, Fletcher, NC.
