Sam was born May 9, 1954, in Marquette, a son of Anne (DePetro) Peano, and grew up in North Marquette. He graduated from Marquette Senior High School in 1975.
In his youth, Sam was active in Boy Scouting and developed an interest in amateur (ham) radio, a passion he maintained throughout his life. He later received his PADI scuba diving education and certification through a course at Northern Michigan University taught by George and Bettey Tomasi.
Sam enjoyed a variety of pastimes, including working word searches and jigsaw puzzles. He valued socializing and made many friends through his regular visits to Hardee's and McDonald's. He also appreciated the visits from the UP Private Duty caregivers and the delicious meals provided by Meals on Wheels. During his time at the hospital, Sam loved the care he received from the nurses and mentioned he didn't want to leave because they were so good to him.
A devoted Elvis Presley fan, Sam made six trips to Graceland over the years. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, where he once served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Sam is survived by his sister, Sharon (James Farrell) Aho Farrell; sister-in-law, Barbara Peano; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Anne Peano; siblings, Lorraine (Henry) Croschere, Clovis Peano, Jr., Norbert "Bob" (Shirley) Peano, and Bernard "BJ" (Mary) Peano; and brother-in-law, James Aho.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the 4th Floor ICU nurses at UP Health System – Marquette, Dr. Jonathan Bjork, and the UP Private Duty caregivers for their exceptional care and kindness, which meant so much to Sam and his family.
The family has chosen to commemorate Sam's life privately. Interment has taken place at Holy Cross Cemetery.
