Sandra Grenke Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral & Cremation Services on Sep. 28, 2025.
Sandra F. Grenke, 85, of Marquette, passed away peacefully after a short illness on
Saturday, September 27, 2025, surrounded by love, hymns, and prayer at U.P. Health
System–Marquette.
Sandy was born in Gillett, Wisconsin on February 20, 1940. She grew up in a farming
family. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. Her career in
education spanned over 40 years, most of which she devoted to supporting struggling
readers in Title I programs. She earned multiple degrees and was honored with a
nomination for Regional Reading Teacher of the Year. In addition, Sandy took on a
program known as "Rock and Read", where new parents received a book for their child
along with learning the value of reading to children from the start of life. Beloved by her
school community, Sandy was known for her kindness and for always offering help to
any child or colleague in need.
Sandy married Herbert Grenke on August 26, 1959. Their love spanned 66 years. As
the wife of Coach Herb, Sandy was a true partner both at home and from the stands.
She warmly opened her home to staff and players, many of whom thought of her as a
second mother while away at school. Quiet by nature, Sandy nonetheless could be
heard cheering boldly from the sidelines-her "Get them!" echoing at countless games.
She shared many special memories with the coaches' wives, friendships she
maintained long after Herb's retirement.
Faith was a cornerstone of Sandy's life. A devoted member of Messiah Lutheran
Church, she participated in Women's Circles, prepared layettes for those in need, and
welcomed new members with open arms. She believed deeply that all people are
beloved children of God, and she lived out her faith with kindness, inclusivity, and grace.
Above all, Sandy was a loving and fiercely protective mother and grandmother. She was
a tireless advocate for her daughter Stephanie through a long battle with mental illness,
and though Stephanie's passing was a heartbreaking loss, Sandy quietly offered
compassion and support to others in the community facing similar struggles.
Her daughter Liz, also a teacher and Reading Specialist, often turned to Sandy for
encouragement, ideas, and wisdom. Sandy took great joy in Liz's marriage to Bill,
carefully arranging every detail of their beach wedding-including the flowers, which
she loved dearly.
Her greatest delight came from being "Grandma Sandy" to her grandchildren, Everest
and Charlotte. She was devoted to them from the moment they were born, rarely
missing a concert, play, or milestone. Family trips to St. George Island, Florida were
filled with adventure and laughter, and time spent at Grandma and Grandpa's home in
Marquette was always special. Watching Everest and Charlotte grow into young adults
filled her with immense pride and joy.
Sandy treasured her friendships and was blessed with many close companions. She
especially cherished her group of friends affectionately known as the "Bungaritas," who
shared life's joys, supported one another in challenges, and created a bond filled with
love and laughter. She also remained active in book clubs and educational groups,
continuing to learn and give to her community.
Recently, Sandy and Herb spent time at Liz and Bill's cottage in New Mexico, where she
painted the desert and mountain landscape, crafted sage bundles with wildflowers for
friends, and faithfully tended to the hummingbirds she adored.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Herb Grenke; daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Grenke
Leach; son-in-law, William Leach; and grandchildren, Everest Emerson Grenke Leach
and Charlotte Avalon Grenke Leach. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces
and nephews.
