Samuel "Sam" D. Swartz, age 94, husband of the late Philomena "Phyllis" A. (Capaldi) Swartz of East Coventry Township, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Born on September 22, 1930, in Spring City, PA, he was the son of the late Samuel D. and Clara (Keen) Swartz.
Sam lived his life dedicated to family, church, his greenhouses, and his beloved cat Sammi. Honesty, loyalty, integrity, generosity and an abundance of love was his way of life. He was a great Christian example to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He was a graduate of Spring City High School and went on to honorably serve in the United States Army, having been stationed in Germany during the Korean War. During his time in the military, he was involved in the Army choir.
Sam was the owner of the former Prizer's Greenhouses in East Coventry. He truly had a "green thumb" and took great pride in his work growing flowers and designing beautiful floral arrangements. Well-known for his exceptional vegetable garden, his passion for horticulture was evident in many other aspects of his life as well. He was on the advisory committees for both Western Montgomery County Vo-Tech School in Limerick and the Center for Arts and Technology Pickering Campus (formerly Northern Chester County Vo-Tech School, Phoenixville).
Sam was a faithful member of Parker Ford Church of the Brethren where he served 37 years as Sunday School superintendent and served on various committees. Additional contributions included teaching the adult Sunday School, serving on the pastoral board, periodically preaching sermons throughout the years, organizing annual vacation Bible School and activities, as well as creating and donating all weekly altar flower arrangements. He always enjoyed singing in church and annually organized Christmas carol outings in the local community visiting individual homes of the sick, elderly and shut-ins. Residents of the Peter Becker Community and Manatawny Manor were also included for the special event.
He loved to spend time outdoors, relaxing, enjoying nature and reading the newspaper to stay current on local events. A fun-loving person, known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Grandpop the Great", he entertained them with tractor rides, walks in nature, playing balloon volleyball, singing, and was infamous for his entertaining "rhyming ability" being fun and youthful as a kid himself! No matter how busy he was with work and church, he always found the time to attend birthday parties, graduations, basketball games, piano recitals, school plays, choir concerts and more.
Sam is survived by four daughters, Phyllis Anne, wife of the late Col. Douglas Lincoln, Jr., Sherry Lynne, wife of Gerald O'Connell, Pamela Dianne and David Mark, Stephanie April, wife of Joseph Lomanto; six grandchildren, Dr. Douglas Lincoln III and wife Dr. Jen, Brian Lincoln, Dr. Ashley O'Connell Ferster and husband Michael Ferster II, Jason Samuel O'Connell and wife Kristina, Gabrielle Lomanto, and Joseph Lomanto Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Henry Lincoln, Charles Lincoln, Elijah O'Connell, Oliver Ferster, and Addison Ferster; and one sister, Mildred "Millie" Davis. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Swartz and Ralph Swartz; his sisters, Rachel Clemens and Edith Landis; as well as 10 half-siblings.
Funeral and burial services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by the Cattermole - Klotzbach Funeral Home, Royersford, PA. Condolences may be offered online at www.RoyersfordFuneralHome.com.
