It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Samuel Louis Thompson, who departed this life in August 2025 at the age of 85.

Born on September 22, 1939, in Mitchells, Virginia, Samuel was the beloved son of the late Mary Thompson and John Morgan. From humble beginnings, he grew into a man of unwavering integrity, strong faith, and deep compassion—a man who touched the lives of all who knew him.

Samuel was a proud graduate of George Washington Carver Regional High School in Culpeper County, VA, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Federal City College in Washington, D.C. He served honorably in the United States Air Force as an Airman 2nd Class, embodying a lifelong commitment to service and duty.

Following his military service, Samuel dedicated his professional life to the world of finance, ultimately retiring as Director of Finance at Amtrak—a role in which he led with both precision and heart. His career was not just a means of livelihood but a testament to his dedication, diligence, and enduring leadership.

Samuel’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, where his quiet strength and humble spirit enriched the community around him.

Samuel is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Verdell (Wyche) Thompson, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and partnership. He was the proud father of two daughters: Velda Marie Johnson (Ross C. Johnson) and Valencia Chloe Smith. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Kyle Ross Johnson (Sandra Johnson) and Kayla Rhandi Smith, and his beloved great-grandchildren, Luca John Johnson and Emilia Grace Johnson, who brought him immense joy.

To know Samuel was to know a man of deep wisdom, humility, and gentle kindness. He had a sharp mind for numbers, a soft heart for people, and a soul enriched by faith, family, and community.

A visitation to honor Samuel’s life will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at:
