Samuel Zena Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home - St. Matthews on Feb. 18, 2026.
Samuel Carl Zena, born February 6th, 1956, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 10th, 2026. He was born in Louisville, KY to Robert B. and Mary Jean Zena.

Sam was a skilled builder and co-owned a successful construction company for many years. He was highly knowledgeable in Antebellum homes and had a deep appreciation for their craftsmanship. He thoroughly enjoyed restoring and working on old cars, appreciating the process as much as the end result.

He loved cooking, especially traditional Lebanese dishes, and he was deeply proud of his heritage and culture. Sharing food was one of the ways he showed love. He also had an eclectic taste in music and held Andrea Bocelli's powerful voice in high regard. Sam's loyalty to those he cared about was unwavering and steadfast, a priceless gift to those fortunate enough to receive it. His love for animals and animal welfare truly reflected these qualities. He had a bit of a rebellious streak and a playful sense of humor. He was known for joking with his lifelong friends, many of whom he grew up with and remained close to throughout his life.

Sam is survived by his beloved children, Andrew Zena of Louisville, and Meggan Renee Monk (Zack) of Oak Harbor, Washington; his siblings Randall Zena of Louisville, Anthony Zena (Margo) of Louisville, Christopher Zena of Louisville, and Karen Thurman (Doug) of Louisville; his devoted nephew, Shepard Thurman of Louisville; his adored granddaughter, Zoey Monk of Oak Harbor, Washington; and his lifelong friend and brother at heart, Don DeHaven of Louisville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert B. and Mary Jean Zena; his sister, Barbara Z. Dozier; and his brother, Dr. Robert Zena.

A celebration of life will be held at Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Rd, on Friday, March 6, 2026 at 1:00 pm. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until the start of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kentucky Humane Society.

Rest in Peace my friend. Although we hadn´t stayed in close contact in later life, we sure had some great times and made some lasting memories as kids. I will cherish the memories and our friendship forever.
