Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hanner Funeral Service on Nov. 24, 2024.
Sandra Kay Epps Burden, lovingly known as "Nana" and affectionately called "Mama Chief" by many, passed away on November 22, 2024, at the age of 76.
Born on July 24, 1948, to Georgie and Fred Epps, Sandra grew up in a home filled with love and faith. She graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1966 and went on to attend Louisiana Tech University. A dedicated public servant, Sandra worked for over 20 years with the Texas Highway Department. She was a proud member of the First Baptist Church, where she sang in the First Praise Choir, and she actively participated in the Atlanta Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Sandra and her husband, David Burden, shared a beautiful love story that spanned 55 years. Their marriage was a testament to devotion, partnership, and unwavering support. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service, leaving behind a legacy of love that will inspire generations. David, a longtime firefighter, served as a Fire Captain in Shreveport before becoming Fire Chief in Atlanta, making fire service a central part of their family's history.
Sandra and David raised two sons, Chris and Chad, who brought her immense pride. Both sons followed in their father's footsteps, serving as long-term captains with the Shreveport Fire Department. Her pride extended to her grandsons, Nate and Nick, who also chose careers as Shreveport firefighters, and to her grandson Kade, who is currently in the fire academy.
Sandra lived for her grandchildren. They were her everything, and her love for them was boundless. She found joy in every moment spent with them. Known as the beloved "ball field grandma," Sandra extended her love and support to countless children over the years through her constant presence at baseball games. Her unwavering encouragement made her a cherished member of the community.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Pat Epps Ellis; her brother-in-law, Clint Ellis; and her in-laws, Louise and J. Burden.
She is survived by her devoted husband, David Burden; her sisters, Freda Rue and Linda Rolandt (and husband Mark); her sons, Chris Burden and Chad Burden (and wife Wendy); her grandchildren, Nate Burden, Nick Burden, Amanda Paxton, Kade Burden, Nolan Burden, and Maddie Lindsey; her great-grandson, Caleb Burden; and numerous extended family members and friends.
Sandra's warmth, generosity, and steadfast faith left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose life was a testament to love and service.
