Sandra Cohen Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 6, 2025.
Sandra Beatrice Cohen, beloved daughter of Samuel and Yetta Cohen, passed from this life on November 5, 2025. Until the end, she was surrounded in her home by family, after a long, valiant battle against cancer. She is survived by her adoring husband of 44 years, Patrick Fowler; her much loved children Jeff (Sara) Fowler and Julie (Brendan) Huggins; her treasured grandsons, Sam Fowler, Finn Huggins, Harry Fowler, and Lochlan Huggins; her devoted siblings Herbert (Diann) Cohen and Ann Mary (Steven) Schwartz; many cherished nieces and nephews; and a multitude of loving friends.

Sandi had a long, distinguished career in her chosen profession of education after obtaining degrees at SUNY Buffalo (BA), Michigan State (master's), and Georgia State (PhD). Sandi took an assistant professorship at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education, where she would spend the next four decades of her professional life, rising to become the Director of Teacher Education and a full professor. During the course of her career at UVa, she served on several national committees, including the Teacher Education Accreditation Council.

In retirement, she pursued many interests, including a newfound love of quilting, Mah Jongg, and gardening. She dedicated countless hours to supporting programs in the greater Charlottesville community, including preparing homemade meals for the soup kitchen and sewing over 1,000 fun pillowcases for children receiving treatment at the UVa medical center.

Sandi and her husband, Patrick, were longtime members of Congregation Beth Israel in Charlottesville. Despite her Brooklyn and Long Island roots, Charlottesville became her home, where she found love and raised her family, and she will be interred in the local Hebrew Cemetery.
