Sandra Mae (Brewer) Nyhusmoen was born in St. Clair, Minnesota on February 8, 1940, to Gerald and Laura (Ward) Brewer. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in St. Clair, Minnesota, graduated from St. Clair High School in 1958 and went on to attend business school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While working in Minneapolis, she met and married Sidney Nyhusmoen on June 15, 1963, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in St. Clair and they made their home in Crystal, Minnesota, where they raised their two daughters, Rebecca and Deborah. Sandy was a devoted and loving wife for 62 years and a wonderful and loving mother to her daughters, loving and appreciative mother-in-law to Robert Lane and Daniel McMenomy, loving grandmother to Riley McMenomy and always kind, caring and interested aunt to her many nieces and nephews and their families. Her family was of utmost importance to Sandy and they were her pride and joy.
Sandy worked for the Bureau of Engraving, Leads Precision Instruments, Conco Shoes, Polaris and Wells Fargo, all in the Metro area and she also had an interesting job testing recipes and products for General Mills. Although she didn’t have a favorite position during her working career, her least favorite job was picking eggs as a kid. While raising their daughters, Sandy was a busy volunteer 4-H leader, volunteered and taught ceramics at Courage Center in Golden Valley, distributed Meals on Wheels in her community and was very active in church activities.
In her younger years, Sandy enjoyed playing golf and tennis and was a member of a women’s volleyball league. She and Sid enjoyed many road trips throughout the country and cruises with their family as well as a wonderful trip to Norway. After retirement in 1998, they made the permanent move to their home on Scandinavian Lake in rural Glenwood, MN. Sandy’s faith was very important to her, and she continued to volunteer in a variety of ways at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Clothes Closet in Glenwood. Her hobbies included reading, puzzles, sudoku, board and computer games and she thoroughly cherished her wonderful friendships in the Scandi Lake community as well as the Swift Falls ladies coffee gatherings. While they loved spring, summer and fall on Scandi, they retreated to their home in Sun City West, Arizona for the winter where they made many new friends from around the country and they were able to enjoy the holidays with their daughters and family.
Everyone who knew Sandy, commented on her positive disposition, helpful nature, interest in what everyone was doing, kind and caring attitude and wonderful love for her family and friends. If you were part of Sandy’s family or her friend group, you were richly blessed.
Sandy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Sidney Nyhusmoen, her daughter Rebecca and son-in-law, Robert Lane, her daughter, Deborah and son-in-law Daniel McMenomy, her grandson, Riley McMenomy, her sister-in-law, Viola Felt, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marion and Laverne (Bob) Lageson, many nieces and nephews and their families, and many Minnesota and Arizona friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Laura Brewer, her brother and sister-in-law, James and Violet Brewer, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Selmer and Evelyn Nyhusmoen, her brother-in-law, Lester Felt, and her sister-in-law, Lorraine Kvam.
