Sandra Gex Thomas, a cherished educator and vibrant soul of Ghent, KY, departed from this earthly realm on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. Born on February 10, 1947 in Louisville to the late William Edward Scott and Louise Gex Scott, Sandra's journey exemplified dedication, compassion, and an unyielding love for knowledge.
A devoted teacher, she imparted her wisdom through teaching history and english at the Switzerland County Indiana School System. Her impact on her students and the broader community was profound, enriched by her spirit as a social butterfly—radiating warmth and fostering connections with all. Sandra's unwavering support for education extended beyond the classroom; she played a pivotal role in assisting her late husband, Darwin Johnson "John" Thomas, III. in countless school functions, reaffirming her commitment to the cause that she held dear.
With a thirst for learning that remained insatiable throughout her life, Sandra attended Belmont University before graduating from the University of Kentucky. She became known as the "Ghent Historian," a title reflective of her avid pursuit of local history and genealogy. Her love for research brought forth enchanting tales that reflected her deep appreciation for the past.
In her leisure, she was a vibrant member of the Caby M. Froman Club, where she served as President for 23 years, and the Red Hat Society, lively organizations that echoed her vivacious spirit. A natural musician, Sandra found joy in playing the piano, often enchanting those around her for hours, skillfully rendering hymns from the entirety of the Baptist hymnal.
Sandra's legacy is further carried on by her loving family: her daughters, Leah Michelle Thomas of Petersburg, VA, and Elizabeth Marie Thomas (Mark Wilson) of Louisville, KY; her son, John Ashley (Jessica) Thomas of Carrollton, KY; her brother, Sam (Sue) Scott of Carrollton, KY; four adoring grandchildren, Sarah Ferguson, Olivia Thomas, Mary Wilson, and Paul Wilson; as well as four great-grandchildren, Eddie Lee, Ramonia Lee, Jonah Lee, and Kyrian Claypool.
She was an active member of the Ghent Baptist Church, where her impact was felt deeply, especially in her role as a Sunday school teacher, shaping the lives of many, infusing faith with knowledge.
Sandra is preceded in death by her husband, Darwin Johnson Thomas, III. who passed on October 6, 2018. With her remarkable contributions to education, her extensive knowledge of local history, and her boundless love for her family, Sandra Gex Thomas leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know her.
