George Andrews Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Family Choice Funerals & Cremations on Feb. 1, 2026.
George "Sandy" Arthur Andrews, born June 2, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, peacefully passed into the arms of his loving Savior, on January 22, 2026, at home in Virginia Beach, Virginia at the age of eighty-four. In his words: "84! Now that is a good age to go be with Jesus."

Sandy loved God, his family, and people. He sought to develop community wherever life's path took him. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Air Force where he served with distinction as a survival instructor for three years. His time in the Air Force instilled in him discipline and purpose that guided him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Sandy pursued higher education at Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC, where he met and married MaryLou Shuff. Following his graduation, he taught at the University where the verses in Psalm 78: 4-7 deeply impacted him:

"We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done…so that the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands."

This vision and passion for quality faith-based education led him to pursue a Masters in Christian School Administration from Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, IN. Sandy played a pivotal role in developing, opening, growing Christian schools, and assisting them to become accredited in Wisconsin, Indiana, Texas, and Georgia, leaving a lasting impact on countless young lives.

Sandy had varied interests and deep commitments. He avidly followed college sports (particularly University of Texas--Hook 'Em Horns!) and found solace in listening to ministry podcasts and music. He invested in friendships from his past and present, frequently connecting with them. He actively engaged in the church family at Avalon Hills Bible Church, Virginia Beach, developing "Senior Saints" and the "Sunday Lunch Bunch." He loved his family deeply, a constant presence in the lives of his children and grandchildren, supporting their interests and achievements with unwavering enthusiasm. His love for his wife, MaryLou, knew no bounds: traveling to exhibitions and workshops and even becoming a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society to support her artistic endeavors. The couple's shared faith and love of God were evident to all who knew them.

Preceded in death by his parents, George Anthony, Jr., and Bernice Vivian Brown Andrews, and his twin sister, Sandra Jean Clark, Sandy leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, MaryLou Shuff Andrews; his son, Sandy Scott Andrews, his dear wife, Renee, and their children: Georgia, Jack, Wyatt, and Olivia; his daughter, Heather Brooke Andrews Johnson, her dear husband Christopher, and their children: Drew and his wife Olivia Johnson, Ashlyn and her husband Manny Maldonado, Kaitlyn, Christina, and Matthew. He always expressed how richly blessed he was!

We will hold a celebration-yes, a celebration and time of worship for the God he loved-on Saturday, February 7, 2026, beginning at 10:30 am at Avalon Hills Bible Church, Virginia Beach, VA. A fellowship potluck will follow in the gym. We invite all who knew him to attend. Bring a dish to share and wear anything burnt orange to honor this life, well-lived and rooted in faith and love.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to causes close to Sandy's heart:

Dear MaryLou and family, my deepest sympathy and love to you all during this time of losing your precious loved one. I am praying for you all. I enjoyed friendship with Sandy through the years of being his brother-in-law. He had a kind heart, a good mind, and a clear Christian faith. He loaned me his biblical Hebrew and Greek texts and textbooks when I attended seminary. I enjoyed talking theology, wrestling, and, of course, Longhorn sports with him. May God give you peace and comfort and strengthen you. -Lee Lever

We didn´t get to meet Sandy until he was 80, but he made room amongst his many friends for our family even then. He bought us ice cream, was one of our foremost cheerleaders in ministry and always showed interest in each one of the children. What a role model! How we miss him!
