Paul Cheek Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Family Choice Funerals & Cremations on Feb. 12, 2026.
Paul Dean Cheek, born on November 27, 1934, in Ohio, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on February 6, 2026, in Virginia Beach, VA. A devoted serviceman and family man, Paul dedicated his life to service and steadfast diligence.

After graduating from high school, Paul embarked on a distinguished military career, first joining the United States Air Force. He later transitioned to the United States Navy, where he found his true calling. It was during his time stationed at Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Kanagawa, Japan, that he met the love of his life, Shigeko Yakoshiji. The two were married for over 50 years, sharing a lifetime of love and companionship until her passing.

Paul's naval career spanned 25 years, culminating in a well-deserved retirement. However, his commitment to service did not end there. He continued to serve his country and community through civil service for an additional 15 years. Paul was a man who thrived on work and staying busy, finding fulfillment in every task he undertook.

Paul was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shigeko Yakoshiji Cheek; his parents, Dean and Nelle Cheek; and his cherished daughter, Sandra Midgette. He leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience through his surviving family: his son, Vincent Cheek, and his wife, Penny Stevens; and his grandchildren, Kai and Mia Cheek, and Zachary, Nathan, and Ian Midgette. Paul is also remembered fondly by many friends and fellow sailors whose lives he touched along the way.

A service to celebrate Paul's life, accompanied by military honors, will be conducted at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery on March 2, 2026, beginning at 11am. Those who knew and loved him are invited to join in honoring a life marked by dedication, loyalty, and love.

Paul Dean Cheek will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those whose lives he graced with his presence. May he rest in peace, reunited with his beloved Shigeko.
