Obituary published on Legacy.com by The Meeks Mortuary & Crematory - Washington Street Chapel on Nov. 27, 2023.
MUNCIE - Sandy (Ashby) Swift, was born on Christmas day, 1952. Sandy passed away surrounded by family on Friday, November 24, 2023 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital after unexpected complications from surgery, where she fought with the fiery spirit she was known for.
Sandy was born and raised in Muncie as one of nine siblings to Letha (Spear-Ashby) Brannan and Gene Ashby. After high school she followed her adventurous heart, taking her to Connecticut, Mississippi, Washington, Southern California, and Kentucky. Along the way, she created beautiful friendships with so many close loved ones who forever held a special place in her heart. She built a career helping many individuals through homelessness, poverty, job insecurity, educational barriers, substance abuse, and brokenness. Having overcome so much herself, she had a special fondness for the wounded, resulting in so many people she worked with walking a healthier life path.
In her later years, she experienced true and unwavering happiness with her husband, Jim. Together, they enjoyed retirement and worked on completing their bucket list travel adventures. They shared laughter, connection, and an undeniable love for each other. He was the light of her life, a perfect companion, and her partner.
Sandy had a zest for life. She was ambitious, adventurous, and a connector of people. She loved bringing her large family together however possible, and actively worked to expand the family genealogy history. She was proud to be from a large family, and loved her siblings and their families deeply. She also found great joy in helping to bring together her fellow Muncie Central Bearcats, where she was a proud 1971 graduate, helping to plan and host annual events.
Sandy is survived by her loving husband, Jim Swift; her daughter, Neena (Guimond) Wilcox (husband, Chris), whom she always declared was her proudest achievement; seven siblings, Fred Ashby (Peggy Ashby), Judy Elsener (Bill Elsener), Louise McKibben (Allen Wilson), Kathy Moore (Lonnie Moore), Tim Ashby (Debbie Abel), Terry Ashby, Danny Ashby (Betty Ashby); her step-children, Jim Swift (Carrie Swift), Mike Swift (Sarah Swift), Vernon (Butch) Guimond, III (Kim Guimond), Wendy Willis (Gerald Willis); her precious grandchildren, Audrey Wilcox, Leah Wilcox, Makenna Swift, Brittany Guimond, Channing Willis (Leslie-Ann), Caitlin Willis, Jarod Willis, and Caleb Willis; and so many wonderful nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Nicholas and Nathanial Guimond; her parents, Letha Brannan and Gene Ashby; her baby sister, Becky Craft (surviving spouse, Bob Craft); and her grandson, Christopher Willis.
