Sara Ann Edgar, 78, of
Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and devotion to her family and friends. Born November 3, 1947, in
Atlanta, Georgia, she was the only child of Rubye Lynch and George William Russell. From an early age, Sara Ann embodied kindness, loyalty, and a spirited love for the people and places that shaped her.
Sara Ann grew up in Avondale Estates and graduated from Avondale High School, where she proudly served as co-captain of the drill team. She performed at every football game-an experience that sparked her lifelong love of football, a passion that would come to define many of her happiest moments.
She attended Georgia State University, earning her degree in Elementary Education. But even more importantly, Georgia State is where she met the love of her life, John Edgar. Their paths crossed on Carnegie Way, and from that moment on, they had found their forever. Their first date-a Georgia Tech football game in 1967-began a tradition that lasted a lifetime. Sara Ann cherished her college years, especially her time as an active member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority.
Sara Ann and John were married in June 1969 at Avondale Estates First Baptist Church. For 56 years, she poured her heart into being a devoted wife and mother. Together they raised their three children-Cameron Russell, Christa Leean, and Sara Elizabeth-in a home defined by love, laughter, and the comfort of Sara Ann's cherished homemade meals.
In 1976, the family joined Smoke Rise Baptist Church, where Sara Ann quickly became a beloved presence. Serving on a host of committees and attending Wednesday night services, she built meaningful and lifelong friendships within the church community-relationships that felt like an extension of family.
Sara Ann's smile, wit, and gentle humor were as unmistakable as her warm, drawn-out Southern accent. She loved country music, cherished time with friends, and was an unwavering Georgia Tech football fan. Her passion for college football was a joy to all who knew her.
John and Sara Ann's family called Alpharetta home for 15 wonderful years, living in the St. Ives Country Club community. The friendships they formed in Alpharetta remained dear to them. Those years were also filled with travel and adventure, as Sara Ann and John embraced opportunities to explore new places together.
In 2010, Sara Ann and John settled in
Vero Beach, Florida, embracing their "best Florida life." For 15 years, she enjoyed her Palm Island community and friends, serving as co-chair of the Social Committee. Quail Valley Golf Club provided many memories. She loved people and never missed an opportunity to find out more about each person she met. They continued to form close friendships and created a home that remained a cherished gathering place for family, especially their three granddaughters. Hosting Shelby, Sylvie, and Vivian brought Sara Ann immeasurable joy.
Sara Ann is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, John Edgar of
Vero Beach, Florida; her children, Cameron Edgar of Savannah, Georgia; Christa Edgar Cathey of Winter Park, Florida; and Elizabeth Edgar of
Atlanta, Georgia; and her three beloved granddaughters, Shelby and Sylvie Edgar, and Vivian Cathey. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Rubye Russell.
