Sara Jessee Obituary

JESSEE, Sara May, died peacefully on October 23, 2008 of Alzheimer's disease. Born on April 15, 1922 in Richmond, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Mary Brown May and Samuel Davidson May of Tazewell, Virginia. Sara was the mother of two Richmond physicians, Dr. Edgar Forrest Jessee Jr. and Dr. Samuel Davidson Jessee, deceased. Survivors include her devoted husband of 63 years, Dr. Edgar Forrest Jessee; two daughters-in-law, Rebecca and Melissa; six grandchildren, Forrest, Lindsay, Sara, Blake, Megan and Elizabeth; one brother, Samuel Davidson May of Marion, Virginia; one sister, Ann May Lucius of San Diego, California; and one cousin, Charles Robert Peery of Savannah, Georgia. She was predeceased by her sister, Mariamne May Symons. After graduating from Hollins University, she received a degree from the School of Social Work at VCU. Sara became a social worker for the City of Richmond serving young children. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, The Woman's Club, The Country Club of Virginia and was an outreach volunteer for the Lewis Booker Sunday School Class. Sara was a beloved and dedicated wife, loving mother and proud grandmother. She kindly and gently touched the lives of all she knew. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Comfort Care Homes for their love and care of Sara. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 24, at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 25, in Jeffersonville Cemetery, Tazewell, Virginia. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, October 27, in Powell Chapel, Second Baptist Church, River and Gaskins. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Samuel Davidson Jessee Endowment for Leadership, Collegiate School, North Mooreland Rd., Richmond, Virginia, 23229.

Dr. Jessee, Forrest, Becky, Melissa, and family,
I just wanted to say thank you for allowing me the pleasure of getting to know Sara, to love her and care for her! She was a beautiful person who loved everyone and always had a smile for them. I have a lot of fond memories that I will cherish forever of Sara and of ya'll. You all are truly very special to me! You are in my thoughts and prayers.
