Sara Louise McLain, a beloved member of the Tifton community, passed away on June 17, 2024 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah Georgia. Sara's professional journey began in Albany, where she worked for an attorney before transitioning to an insurance agency. After relocating to Tifton, she found fulfillment working in the Media Center at Northside Elementary School for over fifteen years. Her commitment to education and nurturing young minds left a lasting impact on the school community.

Apart from her career, Sara had a passion for learning and giving back. She graduated high school and attended business school to further her skills. She was a proud member of Northside Baptist Church and actively volunteered with Meals on Wheels and as an Elections Volunteer before the challenges posed by Covid-19.

Sara's vibrant personality shone through in everything she did. She was known for her independence, love for the Atlanta Braves, strong family values, and unwavering faith as a Christian. Sara had a keen interest in keeping busy with activities that brought joy to others - from providing crockpot candy and grape salad to supporting her granddaughters in all their endeavors which included attending softball games, dance recitals and all school functions possible. She also was an avid follower of her son’s coaching career. She would attend all of the games possible and if she could not, then she would listen to them on the radio or her phone.

Among Sara's proudest accomplishments were her dedication to serving her community through various volunteer roles and being a pillar of strength for her family. She will be remembered for her selflessness, warmth, and unending support for those around her.

Sara was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years at his death on December 16, 2010, William "Billy" Austin McLain, Sr., and her son, William Austin McLain, Jr. She is also reunited with her father, Edward Carlton Scarborough; mother, Mrs. Louise Hay Scarborough; brothers Lamar Scarborough and Millard Scarborough; and sister Carol Barnes.

Sara is survived by her son Bryan McLain and daughter-in-law Carmen McLain; cherished grandchildren Carley McLain Benson and Chris, and Bailey McLain; brother Ed Scarborough; her brother-in-law, Rev. Ernest Barnes as well as her step granddaughter Skylar Futch of Tifton and Mr. Billy’s brother and sister-in-law, Don and Karen McLain, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and her son William’s dog, Sophie, who became her loyal companion after his death.

Flowers accepted or donations may be made to Northside Baptist Church, 4605 Murray Avenue, Tifton, Ga., 31794 or Meals on Wheels, PO Box 2053, Tifton, Ga. 31793.
