Rose Andrew Waller, SCN, 94, died on June 2, 2025, in
Bardstown, Kentucky. She was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 74 years.
Born as Rose Mary Waller on July 30, 1930, in Louisville, Kentucky, she was the youngest of seven children to parents Andrew and Emma Waller, and was the last living sibling. Baptized at St. Peter Church in Louisville, Rose attended St. Peter Grade School and Presentation Academy, where she was first introduced to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. She was raised in a devout Catholic home, and of her six siblings, four joined her in religious life. Two of her sisters became Ursuline Sisters, and her two brothers became Franciscan priests.
Rose entered the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth on Sept. 24, 1948, received the habit on March 25, 1949, and professed her perpetual vows on July 19, 1954. She took the religious name of Rose Andrew in honor of her father.
Sister Rose Andrew was passionate about education, and she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Spalding College in Louisville. She was certified in elementary teaching and religious education.
From 1951 to 1995, she taught students in fifth through eighth grade at schools across Kentucky, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Mississippi. She loved teaching, once saying, "There is a lot of satisfaction in opening a new world to a junior high student. When you see a 'light go on,' you know you have accomplished something."
After decades in education, Sister Rose Andrew turned to community service, offering spiritual support and companionship to fellow Sisters and residents at Nazareth Home and Maria Hall from 1995 until her retirement in 2017. She later joined the Apostolate of Prayer ministry at the SCN Apartments in Louisville and later at Carrico Hall in Nazareth.
In a 2018 interview, she recalled growing up in West Louisville and how her family cherished Christmas and Easter celebrations together. She was close with her parents and siblings, and a strong sense of faith was instilled in her at a young age. She was highly involved in the Church throughout her life, which shaped her strong devotion to Mary and her vocation as Sister of Charity of Nazareth.
In May 2024, at the age of 93, Sister Rose Andrew fulfilled a dream she had held since childhood: placing a crown on the statue of the Blessed Virgin during the May Crowning at Nazareth Home. "It's like a dream that never came true and all of a sudden, it was true," she said of the moment that deeply touched those who witnessed it. Sister Rose Andrew is survived by her extended family, generations of former students, colleagues, and friends, and her religious community, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
