Scott Edward Smith, 76, of Monroeton and Lake Wesauking died peacefully, August 2, 2025, at Robert Hospital following a brief illness.
The third of four sons born to David R. Smith, Jr. and Frances Rice Smith, Scott grew up in Monroeton, attended school there, and graduated from Towanda High School in 1966. He then enrolled in the junior college of Valley Forge Military Academy, Wayne, PA. When graduating from Valley Forge, he was recognized as the top math student in his class and received the Academy's highest fitness award. Following his graduation, Scott enlisted in the United States Army in 1970.
Stationed at Fort Dix, N.J., for basic training, Scott's training from Valley Forge led to his designation as a cadet company commander. Following Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Bliss, Texas, Scott was sent to the U.S. Army Airfield in Wiesbaden, Germany, and assigned to its early-warning radar installation. Scott was fluent in German, and was therefore called upon from time-to-time to serve as an interpreter for the base's communications with the German locals.
Following his discharge from the army, Scott returned to the University of Pittsburgh and graduated in 1974 with a degree in economics. Immediately following graduation, Scott accepted a position at General Motors Acceptance Corporation, but soon changed jobs and became an officer at Northern Central Bank in
Athens, PA. In 1977, Scott was hired as the Credit and Collection Manager at Robert Packer Hospital. During his tenure at the hospital he was instrumental in the creation of the Robert Packer Hospital Credit Union. He eventually left the hospital and became the manager of the Credit Union. In 1989, Scott left the Credit Union and eventually returned to college to get his Masters in Guidance at Marywood University. He graduated from Marywood in 1993 and became the elementary guidance counselor in the Towanda Central School District. He loved this job and enjoyed working there until he retired in 2013.
Growing up in Monroeton, which was then populated with dozens of children who came to be labeled as "baby boomers", Scott seemed to be the center of all activity. Whether building a lean-to, finding vines to turn into Tarzan swings, creating a spook-house in the basement, or organizing a track meet centered on his pole vault pit - using bamboo fishing rods for poles - Scott had a trail of kids behind him. As an Eagle Scout and a member of its Order of the Arrow, Scott attended the National Jamboree at Valley Forge in 1964. He worked several summers at Camp Brule in Sullivan County as Quartermaster, lifeguard, and water-safety instructor.
Scott was an entertainer - for children and adults, with his sleight-of-hand card tricks, balloon animals, and jokes. When his own children were younger, he taught them to love the outdoors by taking them camping and to the family cabin on Elk Creek. He taught them to fish and catch turtles in the creek and at the lake. He loved music and played guitar and banjo in local bands Toe Jam and Bootleg. He also held impromptu concerts for his children and made them mix tapes of his favorite music as well as his own songs. He helped organize and promote open mic night at The Weigh Station in Towanda and was a regular participant at these weekly events. Scott loved to cook. He enjoyed cooking for his family and at South Mountain. As his children got older, he would make their favorite meals when they came home for a visit. His grandson Malcolm was a big fan of his mac and cheese.
Scott was a member of the South Mountain Hunting Club for more than 45 years and had served as its president and as a director. He particularly enjoyed fishing the most remote trout streams in Sullivan County, always hoping to find streams with no human footprints. He loved entertaining his children and their friends during South Mountain weekend parties.
Scott is survived by his wife of 43 years, Donna Clark Smith, children Erica Smith (Philadelphia), Nick Smith (Philadelphia), and Alison Kestel (Joe), and grandson, Malcolm Kestel (Abington), brother, Jeff Smith (Ann), sister-in-law Elly Smith, nephews Joshua, Schuyler, Simon, and David Smith, and sister-in-law Nancy Clark.
Scott was truly one of a kind. He was a sweet and gentle man who loved his family, friends, students, dogs, and music. He will be greatly missed by all who were close to Scott. There will be a Celebration of Life reception at The Flying Taco Mexican Grill in Towanda, PA. on September 27, 2025 from 2PM-5PM.
