Selma J. Engle, 93, of Avon, passed away surrounded by loving family on March 16, 2025. She was born on April 9, 1931 in Burkesville, Kentucky to the late Clury Spears and Letha (Wells) Spears. Selma began working at age 14 at a Cotton Mill in Kentucky, followed by Blue Bonnet Butter Co., Knife & Fork Restaurant, RCA, then as a quality assurance specialist for Naval Avionics for 25 years before retiring in 1994. She was a former member of the Spirit of Life Church and a current member of Impact Clermont Christian Church. Selma enjoyed gardening, shopping, fishing, bowling, playing card games and cooked large meals for many organizations. In the early 2000's she missed working, so she was hired at a gift shop at the Indianapolis International Airport, sewing on buttons and meeting various other needs of passengers. At age 90, she began working at the Dollar Tree store in Avon and was employed there upon her death. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Layton Engle; son, Ron Spears; son-in-law, Abe Johnson; brothers, Kenneth Spears, Franklin Spears, Arnold Spears and Billy Spears; sisters, Ocie Keen, Lucille Capps, Myrtle Rowe, Inis Severe, Ella Severe and Lena Gray. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at Impact Clermont Christian Church ( 9204 Crawfordsville Rd. Clermont, IN 46234) beginning at 12:00 noon, where family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Selma is survived by her daughter, Hilda Johnson; son, Don (Nila) Spears; daughter, Selma "Tina" (Genji Sakurai) Laiche; daughter, Sheila (Sam) Taylor; son, Anthony Joseph (Pam) Berry; sister, Lyda Jones; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
