Dr. Seth H. Barovick, a retired dentist, passed away on September 11, 2025-five days after his 102nd birthday-at his home in
South Burlington, VtSeth was born on September 6, 1923 in New York City, growing up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School, attended the University of Pennsylvania for two years, and then transferred to New York University School of Dentistry in an accelerated program during World War II to encourage people to become dentists. In December 1946, after graduating from NYU, he married Arline Fischler and they later moved to Marathon, New York. As a member of the Air Force, he was stationed in Presque Isle, Maine. In 1951, he accepted an offer to be the base dentist at the Ethan Allen Air Force Base in Colchester, which began his 74-year residence in Vermont. Seth and Arline raised two daughters in Burlington, Robin and Beth. He proudly supported his daughters' academic, athletic, and professional accomplishments. For example, Beth remembers his enthusiastic kiss after she came in third (out of 3) in a swim race.
Seth's dental practice flourished through the years. By the time he retired, he was one of the most appreciated and oldest practicing dentists in Vermont.
After his first marriage ended in divorce, Seth married Myra Hoffman Rothman of Montreal. He treated her four children – Sheindl, Michael, Karen, and Aviva – as his own. The couple traveled extensively and spent many winters in Scottsdale, Arizona. For a city boy, Seth thoroughly embraced Vermont's outdoor life. He particularly enjoyed alpine skiing, tennis, sailing, and snowmobiling, and was a proud member of the 70+ Ski Club in his later years.
Seth was truly a Renaissance Man. He played the piano and had eclectic tastes in music, ranging from classical to comedy records. He was a very savvy early adapter of technology, having bought the first Radio Shack personal computer. He was always a go-to person for information on a variety of subjects and kept abreast of all the latest news and scientific advances. He sported an Apple Watch and could advise young and old on computer-related issues, earning him the moniker of "Prof. von Schnitzelbaum" to describe his advanced techie knowledge.
Seth was intellectually and spiritually curious. He was an active member of Temple Sinai and Ohavi Zedek Synagogue. He had many hobbies, including assembling transistor radios from scratch, making strong dandelion wine, and playing Wordle and crossword puzzles. He possessed an amazing capacity to remember details from past decades, including which roads and highways to take around Vermont (and beyond) to get to where he was going and which subway to take in the 1930s in New York City to get around. He loved to tell (and laugh hard at) "dad jokes" before that term even existed.
For many years, Seth enjoyed Saturday morning breakfasts at IHOP with his "minyan" friends. He always wanted to know the best series to watch on Netflix and even enjoyed watching an occasional football game.
Seth was pre-deceased by his parents, Dr. Sidney and Ethel Barovick, and his siblings, Richard Barovick and Nancy Raizen. Seth was also pre-deceased by his former wife Arline in 2005 and by his wife Myra in December 2022. He leaves Robin Barovick (Antoine Polgar) of East Middlebury, Vermont and Beth Barovick (David Saltzman) of Wayland, MA and South Hero, VT, and their children Steven, Andrew (Yonat) and Julia (Kevin);Sheindl Rothman (Jack Rudnicki) of Montreal and their daughter Reveena, Michael Rothman (Rhonda) of Atlanta, GA and their children Reid and Lexi, Karen Diamond (Murray) of Titchfield, England and their children Aurel, Garrick, Lazarus (Miriam) and Grace (Tom), and Aviva Reuter (Clemens) of Herrliberg, Switzerland.
The family wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to his many caregivers, including Ginger, Mikaela, and the rest of the team. Bobbie Mayhood also provided many years of household and personal assistance.
We also thank Seth's many friends and neighbors, too numerous to mention, for their multiple kindnesses over the years.
Seth lived a long and good life. He was ready to go, and died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Seth will be deeply missed by his family and large community of devoted friends.
Services will be held on Sunday, September 14, at 11:00 AM at Temple Sinai on Swift Street in South Burlington with interment to follow at Hebrew Holy Society Cemetery, Patchen Road, South Burlington.
