SFC Michael Vondale Reid, age 50, of Swannanoa, passed away on July 27, 2025, at his residence. Michael was born on December 13, 1973, in Buncombe County.

Michael was a graduate of T.C. Roberson High School, where he was involved with the JROTC program, and helping Sgt Whitt develop new drills for the class. Michael proudly joined the U.S. Army in 1993 and served our country for 21 years. His service included 3 active duty tours, 2 in Iraq, and 1 in Afghanistan, and earning numerous medals and awards. During his military career, Michael was able to complete many training courses, some to include Advance Leadership, Combat Lifesaver, Jumpmaster, and Warrior leadership which helped him lead, serve, and mentor many others along the way, making a lasting impact for all who encountered him. Michael was a member of the Pathfinders Association, and Silver Wings, along with many others. After Mike retired from the military, he found another passion by serving his community in becoming a Volunteer firefighter, and EMT with the Riceville Fire Department. He dedicated time, effort, and experience by volunteering during Hurricane Helene in the Swannanoa and Black Mountain Communities.

Michael is preceded in death by his father, the late Robert Joseph Reid; and his sister, Wyda L. Barnes.

He is survived by his mother, Veron Hubner of Swannanoa; his sister, Tracy King of Swannanoa; sons, Brendan Reid and Liam Reid; daughter, Hayden Reid; brother-in-law, Joseph Woodby of Swannanoa; nieces, Connie Wallace of Swannanoa and Bristin Barnes (Ron) of Swannanoa; nephews, Robbie Carter of Weaverville, K.C. Carter (Genna) of Weaverville, and Avery McKinney (Brittany) of Hendersonville; along with 11 great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend special thanks to: Chief Tom Kelly of the Riceville Fire Dept. and Terry Norris of the Combat Veterans Association.

The family will receive friends Monday, August 4, 2025, from 6:00 to 7:30pm at Harwood Home for Funerals and a time to share memories will be at 7:30pm at the funeral home. The burial will be on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 2:00pm at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be Tracy King, K.C. Carter, Avery McKinney, Robbie Carter, Mike Eames, and Jeremy Jackson.

Michael- A man who earned his silver wings is now a child of God with angel wings.
