Shankar Garg Obituary

Published by Chiampa Funeral Home on Dec. 20, 2016.
Shankar L. Garg, MD was born on July 31, 1943 in New Delhi, India. He was inspired and encouraged by his elder brother to pursue his dreams of studying medicine. With a modest upbringing, Shankar was selected to the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where he was also awarded a Gold Medal upon his graduation in 1967. Shankar made the courageous decision to leave his family and familiar surroundings to begin a life journey in the America. In 1968, he landed in Schenectady, NY where he did his medical Internship. He pursued his residency in Internal Medicine at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, NY. He completed fellowship in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester, where he ultimately settled with his wife. Dr. Garg established his practice in Rheumatology in 1974. He held clinical appointments at various area hospitals including St. Vincent's and UMass. Dr. Garg was beloved by his patients for his skillful care, compassion, and dedication to their health. Dr. Garg continued to care for his patients up until his passing. Shankar was one of the earliest immigrants of Indian origin to come to Worcester. He loved his community, and the people with whom he shared the journey of building and supporting a home away from home. Shankar passed unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 20, 2016. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a compassionate friend. Shankar is survived by his wife Asha Garg, his two son's Amit and Maneesh, his daughter-in-laws Alpa and Gagan, and his two grandchildren Simran and Nalin. With Shankar's passing, there is a deep void for the Garg family, and for his many friends and colleagues. His memory will remain alive in our hearts, as all of us live each new day as he would have: with vigor, conviction, loyalty, and love. Family and friends will honor and remember Shankar' s life by gathering on Friday, December 23rd for visitation and Hindu Rites at Trinity Church, 440 Main Street, Shrewsbury from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cremation ceremony and Hindu final rites at Rural Cemetery & Crematory, 180 Grove Street, Worcester will follow for family only.

Dear Asha Bhabhi, Amit & Alpa, Maneesh & Gagan and Simran & Nalin,
As this solemn holiday winter season comes upon us, we all are again made acutely aware of the physical absence of our dear and beloved friend - Dr. Shanker Lal Garg ( Lala Ji ). But the real truth is that Shanker Lal has always been and will always be with us in our hearts and minds. We have only to close our eyes and see his smiling face urging us all to stop worrying and keep on working hard to take care of our daily responsibilities to help family, friends and community. And then save some time to have fun, relax,do some Nautanki and laugh together.
May God Bless the Entire Garg Family & Friends with peace, prosperity and good health,
With Lots of Love and Best Wishes,
Ram & Veena Wadhwa

I just learned of the passing of Dr. Garg! It was a shock to hear this. When I first met him in the late 1990's at my first appointment, I knew he was a great, caring doctor. He found out right away what was wrong with me. There should be more Doctors, and just regular people like him. Prayers for his family!

We are devastated to hear this most unexpected Passing away of our dear friend and classmate, hostel and floor mate. We came to Schenectady, USA, at the same time. I got to know him well - his temperament and his care free living style as a housemate. He loved his first - a boat size Pontiac convertible car. Shankar, our LaLaji, will be missed. We the Tyagi Family joins all our classmates in extending our heartfelt condolences to SHANKER LAL Garg's FAMILY. May his soul rest in well deserved peace. His legacy as a friend, Father and a caring Physician shall survive and will be proud beacon for all his associates at various stations of their lives. We may not like it , but have to accept the obvious reality of the brevity of our stay on this earth.
WITH GREAT SORROW and Heavy heart, we bid our last Goodbye to our dear friend ShankerLal.

Shanker Lal Garg was always a very confident and cheerful person and at the center of the social life of Students at All India Institute of Medical Sciences,N.Delhi,India. He was popularly and lovingly called as "LALA" of our class. I had the good fortune of sharing the same Hostel wing with him and learnt a lot of good things from Lala Ji. I can still see him smiling in the Hostel Hall Way and uplifting our spirits. He very well managed the financial affairs of our students union and carried this habit throughout his life. He told me that he would wake up in the early hours of the morning to watch closely the world markets and manage all his family investments. He was a kind and versatile N.C.C. Cadet Officer and won the Cup for the best Social work at Chandpur Camp in 1965. He was very good in Hindi Debates and in stage acting. Not too long ago, he showed his acting skill during his weding Anivesary Party in MA,USA, when he smilingly stood in the cener stage dressed as Lord Krishna with his flute and all the Gopies danced around him including his wife Asha. He was a skilled cross country runner and he did outrun most of his Classmates in meeting his maker. We will all miss him.
