Sharon Kay Manuel

Sharon K. Manuel, known by most people as Shay Manuel, passed away peacefully at
the Tribute At The Glen assisted living facility in Woodbridge, Virginia on May 30th, 2025,
surrounded by her family. Shay was 76 years old and died from dementia after battling the
disease for over 10 years. She lived with her family in Montclair, Virginia from December 1989
through November 2012. In November 2012 she moved with her husband to a new home in
Stafford. She entered the assisted living facility on November 2 nd, 2023.
Shay was the only child of Selma and Dennis Frank. She was born in Bryan, Ohio on
June 2, 1948. Dennis died of a heart attack 4 weeks after Shay was born and Selma never
remarried. Shay married Philip K. Manuel on October 24 th, 1970, in the Trinity Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Bryan where she was a member. She graduated from Ridgeville Corners
High School and then attended Miami of Ohio University for 2 years. Prior to the start of her
junior year of college she transferred to The Ohio State University to be close to her best friend,
Cindy Eggert. She graduated from Ohio State in the summer of 1970 with a degree in
Elementary Education.
She married Philip shortly after graduation and adapted quickly to being an Army
Officer's Wife. She moved 14 times in the first 19 years of her marriage and lived as far south
as Alabama and as far north as Fairbanks, Alaska. Her oldest and youngest daughters were
born in Colorado Springs, Colorado and her middle daughter was born in Fairbanks.
She was a stay-at-home mother to her 3 daughters until the youngest one started
kindergarten at which time she started her career as an elementary teacher at Warwick River
Christian School in Newport News, VA. After moving to Montclair, she taught in the Prince
William County School System for 14 years, the last several years at Rockledge Elementary
School in Lakeridge. She retired in the spring of 2004 after undergoing quadruple bypass
surgery. She attended and was active in the Lutheran Church of the Covenant for 20 years
before transferring to Grace Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School and served on the
social ministry committee and Alter Guild at both churches. She was a soccer mom to her
daughters for over 18 years and then became a soccer grandma for 20 more.
Shay is survived by her husband, Philip K. Manuel and daughters Courtney Ravert and
husband, Steve, Megan Manuel, and Alyssa Manuel, her grandchildren Bailey Manuel-White
and wife, Jenny, Owen Ravert, Matthew Ravert, and Kaylie Barber, and her great-
granddaughter Charlotte Rose Manuel-White. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Kathy
Penfield, whom she considered the sister she never had, and her husband Dave Penfield,
sister-in-law Kristy Hunn, her husband Dave Hunn, nephews Jon Penfield and Sean Hunn, and
niece Janna Penfield. She is predeceased by her mother and father, Selma and Dennis Frank
and mother-in-law and father-in-law Mary Manuel and Philip H. Manuel.
The viewing will be held at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home and Crematory on
Wednesday evening, June 11th from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Grace
Lutheran Church on Thursday June 12th from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Pastor Puls from Grace
Lutheran Church will conduct the service. A short reception at the church will follow the service.
Interment will follow the reception at 12:30 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
