Sherrey Ellen (Zavodny) Blad went to be with her Savior on May 8, 2025. Sherrey was born in Gary, Indiana on October 10, 1942 to Stephen and Dorothy (Hodges) Zavodny. She moved to the Hamlet area with her parents in 1951. She graduated from Hamlet High School in 1961 and Ball State University in 1964. She married John Blad on November 28, 1964 and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. John & Sherrey began their life together in Benton Harbor, Michigan before moving to Fort Wayne, Indiana and spent the remainder of their married life in the Fort Wayne area.
After college, she started her career as a teacher, but found it wasn't her calling so she moved on to what she did love, her family. Her family would say this was her greatest accomplishment, raising a family and being a devoted wife. Sherrey lived her life with purpose, giving freely of her time to her church and working as a librarian and cook at Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran School. In her spare time, Sherrey enjoyed gardening and sewing. After her children were grown, Sherrey took an interest in quilting, making special gifts for those she loved. In all her endeavors, she was happiest when spending time with her husband.
Survivors include husband John; son Timothy Blad of Carmel, Indiana; daughter Carrie Brady (Joe) of Lakewood, Colorado; sister Susan Hughes (Jon) of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother Stephen Zavodny (Judy) of Traverse City, Michigan; eight grandchildren, Christa Blad, Stephen Blad, Jacob Blad, Andrew Brady, Ryan Brady, Blaine Ledbetter, Christian Ledbetter, Carter Ledbetter and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Sherrey was preceded in death by her father, mother, and daughter-in-law Christina Blad.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 6318 W. California Road, Fort Wayne, with calling one hour prior to the service. The family will also receive family and friends at the church, on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will take place on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. (EST) at Fletcher Cemetery, Hamlet, Indiana.
Memorials may be directed to Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran Church Building Fund.
