Sherrill Freeman Smith of
High Point, NC passed away on December 19, 2025.
She was born in High Point on July 25, 1948, the daughter of Samuel Lloyd Freeman and Betty Bulla Freeman, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother Dale Freeman.
Sherrill married Charles Smith on August 5, 1966. She was a fun-loving, dance the night away, quick-witted, friend to all, and like Queen Esther in the Bible, a very beautiful woman and she remained so through two bouts of breast cancer and that cruel disease of dementia.
As her dementia progressed, when I (Charles) began singing one of the old hymns, she would begin singing with me and would sometimes remember words that I had forgotten. In the later stages of her dementia, when it was very difficult for her to communicate, I was giving her some ice cream and after she had eaten quite a bit, I asked her, "did she want more?". She struggled to answer but a little wrinkle of a smile appeared on her face and she said, "are you stupid?". I laughed, knowing that she indeed wanted more.
Sherrill and Charles enjoyed fifty-eight years of continually working on their marriage, recognizing that they were both very broken and flawed people. By the grace of God, the commitment that was made to one another lasted for a lifetime. The Bible says, "Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins." It certainly did in our relationship and over a lifetime that love deepened in such a way that could only be explained by the steadfast love and grace of God.
Sherrill loved to crochet, making things like personalized Christmas stockings for grandchildren, blankets, and many other things. If she was sitting, she almost always had the hook and fabric in her hands making something useful and beautiful. For most of her life, she was a hairdresser, starting out in the home but eventually working for many years as the hairdresser of the Wesleyan Arms Retirement Center and Nursing Home. She loved her job. But it was more than just a job for her, it was her ministry. She was definitely in her element as a hairdresser.
She was a long-time member of First Wesleyan Church where she had many friends with whom she fellowshipped and loved. In her later years, she and Charles started attending Westover Church in Greensboro and made many new friends with the believers there.
Sherrill is survived by her husband, Charles; two beautiful daughters, Wendy Clark and Julie Leck (husband Ben); three grandchildren by Wendy, Hallie MacEldowney (husband Jonathan) of Rolesville, NC, Maggie Collazo (husband Erik) of Sunset Beach, NC and Cammie Clark of Kernersville, NC, three grandchildren by Julie and Ben Leck, Charleigh Leck of College Station, TX, Jackson Leck of Apex, NC and Zoey Leck of
High Point, NC. Sherrill is also survived by three brothers, Keith Freeman (wife Cathy), Tim Freeman (wife Patricia), and David Freeman and two great grandchildren, Cooper and Millie Collazo.
Her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her pride and joy and their visits made her smile.
A Celebration of her life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, December 27, 2025, in the High Point Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service with Pastor Aron Willis officiating. Committal will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
