Shirley Boyd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McKoon Funeral Home & Crematory on Dec. 15, 2025.
Shirley Andrews Boyd passed away peacefully at Piedmont Newnan Hospital

Saturday, December 13, 2025, just eight days after celebrating her 86th birthday

at home with family and friends. She was born in Augusta, GA on December 6,

1939 to Elbert and Gladys Andrews, as were four sisters: Estelle, Mary, Laverne

and Gladys and three brothers; E T, Amos and Jack, all now deceased. As a child

she was a fearless and agile tree climber. Her father would always ask her to climb the

pear tree in their yard and shake them down. She also liked to climb the windmill

her father had built.

She graduated from Richmond Academy in Augusta, GA and received her RN degreefrom Barrett School of Nursing in Augusta where she met her future husband, Ronald Jack Boyd. He was a freshman at the Medical College of GA and happened to be the roommate of her cousin, Oliver Fussell who introduced them. Her nursing career was quite varied from regular duty, OB/GYN, Charge Nurse, Alcohol & Drug, Public Health and retired from State of Georgia.

Shirley and Jack married during his second year of medical school and their first child, Andrea , attended her father's graduation. Jack did his internship at Rome, GA., where Shirley worked at the hospital, and their second child, Glenda, was born just prior to a two-year stint in the USAF in Altus, OK, where their third child, Ronald Jackson, was born. Upon discharge from the service, Jack started his practice in Alma, Ga, with Shirley as his office nurse for a short period of time due to financial necessity.

The opportunity soon arose for him to take over another MD's thriving practice in Milledgeville, Georgia. They were soon able to purchase a home in a rural close-knit, family-oriented

community only five miles from town known as 'Hopewell Church Community'. This was the ideal atmosphere for young families raising their children. Both young and elderly relied on each other. Some of Shirley's fondest memories are during this time. She also enjoyed Square Dancing, Arts and Crafts, and eating out with friends.

The move to Sharpsburg in February 2011 was to be near their daughter, Dr. Glenda Boyd, a Psychologist, who had previously lived in Colorado but had moved to Newnan.

Shirley had 66 years of marriage and dearly loved her family. She was a follower of Jesus since age five, loved music and found great comfort in gospel hymns these latter years. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dr Glenda S Boyd. She was survived by her husband and two children, Andrea D and Ronald Jackson.

The funeral service will be held Friday, December 19, 2025 at 3:00 PM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home 38 Jackson St. Newnan, GA 30263 with Rev. Lee Ayers officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will recive friends from 2 PM until service time.
