It is with deep sadness that the children of Shirley A. Cerny announce her passing on October 11, 2024, at the age of 86.
Shirley was born in Marion, OH on June 13, 1938, to Earl F. Fleming and Irene M. Fleming.
Shirley graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1956. She met her husband, George, at the Hi-Way Roller Rink, who had decided to marry her at first sight. Shirley immediately fell for his charm and bad-boy persona. They married on August 8, 1958, and spent the next 57 years raising their four children and building their lives together in Pleasant Township.
She worked as an executive secretary for CNA insurance for over 22 years, commuting to Columbus daily for many years. When she came home from work, she'd vacuum, do laundry, and make dinner and dessert! She was constantly moving and on the go, always looking for anything to do if it meant she didn't have to sit still!
Shirley and George skied yearly with friends and family in Vail, Colorado. They enjoyed spending time together driving aimlessly around Ohio searching for bargains at flea markets. In her golden years, Shirley spent her hours line dancing with the Marion Senior Center, doing yoga, going to movies, and shopping for makeup and clothes (that she didn't need). She traveled to Chicago and San Diego to visit her daughter, Beth, every chance she could. Her children took her to New York City on her 80th birthday, and she truly enjoyed the excitement of the city.
Shirley will always be remembered for her gorgeous eyes and beautiful smile. She was good-natured and had a big heart - she did everything possible to raise, love, and support her children and grandchildren. Mom loved to skip dinner altogether, choosing instead to unwind with a slice of cake, coffee, and a glass of wine for dessert. She was the best! And we were lucky to call her our mom and grandma.
Shirley is survived by her son Jeffrey (Paula) Cerny, daughter Debra (Greg) Winger, son Michael (Vickie) Cerny, daughter Beth (Joe Ciriello) Cerny, grandchildren Kelly Zwink (Rob), Jennifer Kight, Dr. Ryan Winger (Asalya), PhD, Tyler Winger (Morgan), Christopher Winger, Drake Cerny, Carly Cerny, Olivia Patino, and Max Patino and great-grandchildren Ronan, Paul, Kamden, Aerabella, Alaire, Amelie, Blake, and Cole.
Her husband, George F. Cerny Jr., preceded her in death, as did her parents and siblings: Earl F. and Irene M. (Brown) Fleming, Dale, Jack, Darryl, Douglas, Delores Thompson, Janice Witzel, and Joann Uhl.
Graveside services will be observed privately by her family in Waldo Cemetery, where she will be buried next to her husband. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Snyder Funeral Center in Delaware.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1379 Dublin Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
