Shirley J. Gatto, 81, of Carbondale, PA, died Tuesday morning, June 3, 2025 at home after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Joseph F. Gatto on November 26, 2018.
Born July 18, 1943 in Bethlehem, PA, and raised in Carbondale, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charlotte Leonard Lentz.
Shirley was a retired seamstress having been employed for over 30 years in the local garment industry and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She was a faithful Catholic and a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Carbondale, PA. Shirley was dedicated to the Blessed Mother at an early age and prayed to her often.
Shirley was devoted to her family as a wife, mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, tending to her garden and keeping her home and yard in pristine condition. Shirey was a die-hard New York Yankees fan who never missed watching a game.
She is survived by four children: Regina Luchonok and husband, Nicholas of Forest City, PA, Denise Gatto of Bethlehem, PA, Joseph Gatto and wife, Linda of Kingston, PA, and Louis Gatto of Carbondale, PA; four grandchildren: Lindsey Luchonok, Nicholas Luchonok, Jr., Max Gatto and Riley Gatto; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Herbert and David Lentz; and three sisters: Carol Nepa, Joan Testa, and Linda Lentz.
The funeral was held Saturday, June 7, 2025 from Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 89 Farview Street, Carbondale, PA, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, PA, celebrated by Rev. Seth Wasnock, pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Nicholas Luchonok, Jr., Lindsey Luchonok, Max Gatto, Riley Gatto and her nephews: Joseph and Louis Gatto.
