Mitchell Family Funeral Home - MarshalltownShirley R. Gould, age 98, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Iowa River Hospice Home. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.
Per the wishes of Shirley and her family, cremation rites will be accorded. A graveside service has been scheduled for Friday, November 7, 2025 (please note date) at 11:00 A.M. at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family for a later designation. Shirley Raye Petrie was born on August 7, 1927, in her parent’s country home near Garwin, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry and Jessie (Smith) Petrie. On August 9, 1945, she married the love of her life, Walter Keith Gould in Rockford, IL. After her children were born, Shirley stayed home to care for her family. Later she began her working career as a waitress, most known for her time at Lloyd’s Restaurant, where she worked for a little over twelve years. She went on to become a bartender and owner of “The Challenge Lounge.” Shirley operated a bingo parlor named “L.O.G. Bingo” in Marshalltown. She was also a proud member of the Moose Lodge in Marshalltown.
For 23 years, Shirley enjoyed spending her winters in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she could spend time with her family while sharpening her gambling skills. In her free time, Shirley enjoyed going to the casino and playing video poker machines. She also liked playing several card games, including gin and shanghai. Shirley was a true animal lover, whether it was a cat or a dog, she loved them all.
She is survived by her two children: Dennis (Roxan Kuntz) Gould and Patricia “Patty” Lee Duff, both of Marshalltown, IA; her five grandchildren: Robert (Denise) Buerkens, Benjamin (Oanh) Duff, Chad (Heather) Gould, Kimberly Raye (Roger) Miller, and Jessica Lee (Jeff) Lantz; 12 great-grandchildren; and 5 great great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; and her favorite cat Moses, AKA “Mosey.”
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Keith Gould; her parents: Henry and Jessie; and her siblings: Charlie, Edna, and Clarence.
