Shirley Hobdy Lawson

We celebrate the life and legacy of Shirley Hobdy Lawson, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who peacefully departed this life on October 28, 2025.
Born on February 13, 1947, in Pike County, Alabama, Shirley was the daughter of the late Lee Oz Wheeler-Hobdy and Ozzie Hobdy. She was married to Lavoy Lawson, and though their paths eventually diverged, Shirley carried the torch of parenthood with unwavering strength and grace - raising her children with love, resilience, and faith.
Early in her life, Shirley joined Bethel Baptist Church in Troy, Alabama where all her sisters, brothers, grandmother, cousins, uncles, and aunts attended. Church was not only a spiritual place, it was also a place where families met for Sunday school and Sunday afternoon services for youth. It was a grand time for all!
Upon arriving in New Jersey the entire Wheeler family and offspring established the Grace Temple Baptist Church, 185 South 16th Avenue, Newark, New Jersey (Reverend John L McClain). The church still services the same community where the family still worships today carrying on the Wheeler legacy.
Shirley's career began in the hospitality industry, where her warmth and professionalism touched many lives. She later served with the State of New Jersey, continuing her commitment to public service until health challenges led to her retirement.
Shirley is survived by her beloved children: Derrick Lawson of Newark, NJ, Jill A. Council of Mount Olive, NJ and Lavetta A. Walker of Union, NJ; her grandchildren: Jeffrey Lundy, Albert K. Council, Zhane' L. Council and Justin Terrain; her great grandchildren: Jayden Lundy, Jalen Lundy, Avi Council, Jacey Lundy, Grayson Terrain and Alize Terrain; her nieces (Williams Family): Jacqueline Williams and Juyiana Williams of Newark, NJ; along with a host of extended family & friends.
Shirley's memory lives on through a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends across New Jersey and beyond.
