Shirley Ann Mathis, daughter of the late Walter Edward and Clara Mae Spray, passed away February 22, 2026.

Shirley was a longstanding and dedicated member of her community. She was a graduate from Byars Hall High School in 1960. She was married to her husband, Wallace Mathis, for 54 years. She held many clerical positions throughout her career, her most notable roles being a secretary in the Tipton County School system at Holmes School and Crestview Elementary and a customer service representative at Southwest Electric Company for over 20 years. She was an active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU, A.C.O.R.N.S, and the benevolence committee. She could often be found serving in the kitchen or at any children's ministry event. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Johnny and Roy Spray, and her sisters, Dorothy Grayam, Artie "Tabby" Sanders, and Mary Joy Bridges.

She leaves behind three siblings, Leonard Spray, Ira "Bo" Spray, and Ruby Workman; two children, Wade (Carole) Mathis and Elise (Brent) Eads; four grandchildren, Drew (Nora) Mathis, Amy (Mark) Shrum, Tanner (Kimberly) Powers, and Cassie (Cody) Simpson, and nine great-grandchildren Jacob Woodfin, John Luke Powers, Paisley Powers, Ruthie Cate Mathis, Turner Shrum, Cole Mathis, Nellie Shrum, Matthew Woodfin, and Griffin Powers.

Services for Shirley Mathis will be held at 1p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, at Covington Funeral Home, with interment to follow in R. H. Munford Cemetery in Covington. Visitation for family and friends will begin two hours prior to the service in the chapel.
