Shirley Lewallen O'Neal, 78, of Ashland, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Community Hospice Care Center.

She was born on August 10, 1947, to the late Lewis and Ruth Sexton Lewallen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Herbert Lee O'Neal; two brothers, Lewis Lewallen Jr. and Stephen Lewallen; and two sisters, Jean Lewallen Rose and Thelma Lewallen Lambert.

Shirley graduated from Catlettsburg High School in 1964 and earned her cosmetology license from Ashland Beauty College in 1969. She worked at Carl's Style Room until it closed and then continued her profession at Talk of the Town until her retirement.

Shirley was known for her candid and honest nature, always speaking her mind with sincerity and kindness. She was strong-willed and determined, facing life's challenges with quiet courage and steadfast resolve. Her strength of character was a source of inspiration to those around her.

A devoted member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Shirley was active in many areas of ministry. She sang in the choir, played in the handbell ensemble, participated in the Disciples Women's Ministry, and was in charge of the church sign. She had a special gift for making others feel welcome, often reaching out to those who were unchurched and inviting them into the community of faith. Her charisma, quick wit, and bright smile brought warmth and energy wherever she went. When Shirley loved someone, it was unmistakable.

She also had a deep love for her home, taking great pride in caring for it and nurturing her flowers, which brought her much joy and peace.

Shirley was a passionate University of Kentucky basketball fan and was proudly recognized by The Daily Independent as the number one UK fan.

Shirley is survived by her brother, Earl Lewallen of Melbourne, Florida; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a wide circle of dear friends. Although Shirley never had children of her own, she showered her love on her husband and family, who always felt the depth of her care and devotion. She is also survived by her beloved mini Goldendoodle, Zoe.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), with Rev. Jacque Compton officiating. Burial will follow beside her husband Herb at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Shirley's memory may be made to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1901 Winchester Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101.
